Quantum Surgical Acquires J&J's NeuWave Medical to Expand Robotic Cancer Treatment Platform

Quantum Surgical, a medical robotics company specializing in cancer treatment, has completed its acquisition of NeuWave Medical (搜索) from Johnson & Johnson, creating a combined platform aimed at democratizing robotic-assisted tumor ablation treatments. The deal establishes Precision IO Group (搜索) as the parent company, with medtech veteran Kurt Azarbarzin appointed as CEO.
The acquisition brings together Quantum's Epione robotic platform with NeuWave's established microwave ablation technology, which is currently used by physicians in over 70% of the top cancer centers in the United States. NeuWave's technology enables percutaneous tumor ablation procedures, where needles are inserted through the skin to treat tumors with minimally invasive techniques.
Strategic Consolidation in Interventional Oncology
Johnson & Johnson originally acquired NeuWave in 2016 and had worked to integrate its microwave ablation technology with robotic systems acquired through the purchase of Auris Health. However, J&J announced plans to discontinue the NeuWave business last year before receiving Quantum's binding acquisition offer in September.
"As part of Quantum Surgical, NeuWave will be well positioned to continue delivering innovative products, solutions, and support to its customers," a J&J spokesperson stated. The company indicated that the divestiture reflects its continued focus on evaluating its surgical technologies portfolio to optimize operations and accelerate growth.

Expanding Treatment Access Through Technology
Quantum Surgical's Epione robotic platform assists physicians in performing percutaneous tumor ablations for early-stage cancers. The system is CE marked for abdominal, chest, and musculoskeletal structures indications and has FDA clearance for abdominal ablation procedures. To date, more than 1,400 patients have been treated with the Epione system across Europe and the United States.
The newly formed Precision IO Group (搜索) is developing remote intervention capabilities that could significantly expand access to specialized cancer care. The remote interventions project aims to leverage world-renowned experts for remote trajectory planning and results assessment using Epione tools, potentially allowing patients to access top-tier physicians without traveling long distances.
Leadership and Future Vision
Kurt Azarbarzin brings extensive medtech experience to his role as CEO of Precision IO Group (搜索). He previously founded and led SurgiQuest, served as CEO of EndoQuest Robotics and Verb Surgical (a Johnson & Johnson-Google joint venture), and most recently worked as a Partner at Frazier Healthcare Partners.

Operational Continuity and Growth
Both companies will continue operating independently to ensure uninterrupted service for existing users. The Epione platform maintains its open-architecture design, remaining compatible with common CT imaging and tumor ablation modalities to provide physicians flexibility in treating various tumor morphologies.
