The leadership change follows a challenging period for Recursion, which has seen its stock price crater 86% since its April 2021 IPO, leaving the company with a current market capitalization of $2.2 billion. The company's financial performance has deteriorated significantly, with revenue for the latest 12 months through September 30 shrinking by one-third to $44 million from $65 million, while losses ballooned by nearly 90% to $716 million.
Earlier this year, Recursion made significant cuts to its operations, culling half of its drug pipeline and reducing its workforce by 20% in June—the third round of layoffs since August 2024. These moves reflect the broader challenges facing AI-driven drug discovery companies as they struggle to translate technological promises into commercial success.
Unfulfilled Promise of 100 Drugs in 10 Years
Gibson co-founded Recursion in 2013 with a bold vision: using AI and technology to revolutionize drug discovery. In 2014, he promised the company would develop 100 drugs in 10 years. More than a decade later, that ambitious goal remains unfulfilled, with Recursion having brought no drugs to market despite its pioneering position in AI drug discovery.
"Recursion was the first to the space, which was kind of incredible, but it's been harder than people might've thought in the beginning," Khan acknowledged in her first interview since accepting the CEO position.
New Leadership Embraces the Challenge
Khan brings significant experience in AI-driven pharmaceutical development, having previously built Johnson & Johnson's 250-person AI team from scratch as chief data science officer and global head of strategy for innovative medicine R&D. She joined Recursion in April 2024 as head of R&D and chief commercial officer before being tapped for the top role.
"A lot of people when I went to Recursion said, 'Changing the rules about how medicine is made is really hard.' I'm like, 'All right, challenge accepted,'" Khan told Forbes. "Is it going to work? Is it not? It is so worth a try, and rising up to that challenge, because 20 years into my career, we still have a 90% failure rate."
Current Pipeline Shows Promise Despite Setbacks
Despite the company's struggles, Khan pointed to several encouraging developments in Recursion's current pipeline, which includes half a dozen drugs targeting cancer (搜索) and rare diseases (搜索). One AI-designed drug candidate addresses a hereditary genetic disorder (搜索) causing hundreds of gastrointestinal polyps that almost inevitably lead to colon cancer (搜索). Khan expects new clinical data on this therapy within weeks.
The company has also secured milestone payments from pharmaceutical partnerships, including a recent $30 million payment from Roche and its subsidiary Genentech for delivering a whole-genome map of specialized immune cells designed to accelerate neurological disease treatments.
The Broader Challenge of AI Drug Discovery
Khan emphasized the fundamental challenge facing AI drug discovery companies: the need to build comprehensive biological data maps from scratch. "You can't create drugs until you have this map and this data," she explained. "In biology, the data has been so rudimentary, fragmented and problematic that companies that want to use AI for drug discovery need to gather it together from scratch."
This data-gathering requirement represents a significant hurdle for the industry, which currently sees only 10% of drug candidates succeed at a cost of $3.5 billion and 10 years to reach market. These statistics underscore the potential value of AI-driven approaches that could theoretically bring medicines to clinic faster and at lower cost.
Market Skepticism Remains
Despite Khan's optimism about "green shoots of success," market analysts remain cautious. Jefferies analyst Dennis Ding recently called Recursion's drug discovery platform "novel and promising" but noted that validation may "take some time" with clinical readouts "difficult to interpret." His current rating on the stock remains at Hold.
Gibson, who has been considering succession planning since the company's 2021 public offering, told STAT that he had been evaluating whether his skills matched what the company needed in its current phase. His departure marks the end of an era for one of the earliest companies to attempt large-scale AI application in drug discovery, while Khan's appointment represents a bet on experienced pharmaceutical industry leadership to finally deliver on the technology's promise.
