RMIT University Develops Molybdenum Oxide Nanodots That Selectively Target Cancer Cells

Researchers at RMIT University have developed a novel cancer (search) treatment approach using tiny metallic particles called nanodots (search) that can selectively destroy cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue largely unharmed. The breakthrough, achieved through an international collaboration, represents a promising advance in cancer therapy design that could address the significant limitations of current treatments.
Nanodot Technology and Mechanism
The nanodots (search) are made from molybdenum oxide (search), a metal compound commonly used in electronics and alloys. By fine-tuning the chemical composition with small amounts of hydrogen and ammonium, researchers enabled the particles to release reactive oxygen molecules - unstable forms of oxygen that can damage cell components and trigger programmed cell death.
"Cancer (search) cells already live under higher stress than healthy ones. Our particles push that stress a little further -- enough to trigger self-destruction in cancer cells, while healthy cells cope just fine," explained Dr. Baoyue Zhang, one of the study's lead researchers.
Laboratory Performance Results
In laboratory tests using cervical cancer (search) cells, the nanodots (search) demonstrated remarkable selectivity, destroying three times more cancer (search) cells than healthy cells within 24 hours. The particles achieved this selective targeting without requiring light activation, which is uncommon for this type of technology and represents a significant advantage over existing photodynamic therapies.
Additional testing revealed the particles' powerful reactivity, with the same nanodots (search) breaking down a blue dye by 90 percent in just 20 minutes, even in complete darkness. This demonstrates their ability to function effectively without external light sources, unlike many current light-required therapies.
Collaborative Research Effort
The project was led by Professor Jian Zhen Ou and Dr. Baoyue Zhang at RMIT University, working in collaboration with Dr. Shwathy Ramesan at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Melbourne. The international team also included researchers from Southeast University (search), Hong Kong Baptist University, and Xidian University in China. The work received support from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs (COMBS).
Advantages Over Current Treatments
The nanodot technology offers several key advantages over existing cancer (search) therapies. Current treatments typically damage healthy body cells along with tumors, whereas these particles demonstrate selective toxicity. Additionally, the nanodots (search) are made from widely available metal oxide materials, potentially offering a more affordable and safer treatment option compared to existing therapies.
Current Limitations and Future Directions
The research remains in early stages, having been tested only on laboratory-grown cells without progression to animal or human studies. The COMBS team at RMIT is continuing development work with several key objectives: creating targeted delivery systems to ensure particles activate only inside tumors, controlling the release of reactive oxygen species (search) to prevent damage to healthy tissue, and seeking partnerships with biotech or pharmaceutical companies to advance testing in animal models and develop scalable manufacturing methods.
