Roche and Genentech Open Boston Innovation Center Focused on Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic Disease

Roche and Genentech opened the Roche Genentech Innovation Center in Boston's Allston neighborhood at Harvard's Enterprise Research Campus on Thursday.

Roche and its US biotechnology subsidiary Genentech have opened the Roche Genentech Innovation Center (RGIC) Boston, a research and development facility dedicated to cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (CVRM) diseases. The center is located at Harvard's Enterprise Research Campus in the Allston neighborhood, according to a company press release issued Thursday.
The facility is designed to bring together scientists working in basic research, clinical development, artificial intelligence and scientific data, creating an environment where work spans from early-stage discovery to advanced clinical development. Roche has signed a 10-year lease for a total area of 95,000 square meters, with capacity for up to 500 specialists.
"This investment in Boston is an important part of our commitment to expand our US manufacturing and R&D footprint," said Roche Group CEO Thomas Schinecker. "By investing in scientific talent, new capabilities and infrastructure, we are strengthening our ability to discover and develop the next generation of medicines for patients."
Schinecker added that scientific innovation has always been the foundation of Roche and Genentech's success, and that the United States remains one of the company's most important innovation hubs.
A Dedicated CVRM Hub
The Allston site will serve as Roche's cardiovascular, renal and metabolism hub, establishing what the company describes as a significant end-to-end research and development presence in that disease area. The center is intended to bring together discovery biologists, clinical experts and computational scientists, and it will draw on collaborations with academic labs across the Boston-Cambridge area specializing in cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease (搜索) research.
Manu Chakravarthy, the site's head and Roche's global head of cardiovascular, renal and metabolism product development, announced the grand opening in a LinkedIn post. The post referenced an inaugural RGIC Boston Science Symposium held alongside the opening, with a scientific program covering CVRM disease biology, human genetics and AI-driven drug discovery.
Roche has previously applied artificial intelligence in cancer research to identify targeted treatment approaches and to analyze the effectiveness of new cancer drugs in clinical trials, and has also worked on efforts to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Footprint and Broader Investment
The Boston center forms part of the group's $50 billion (CHF41 billion) commitment to manufacturing and research in the United States, building on recent investments in Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Hillsboro, Oregon. Roche and Genentech employ around 25,000 people in the United States, with 15 research and development centers and 13 manufacturing sites across the pharmaceuticals and diagnostics sectors.
The Boston buildout follows a series of moves by Roche to expand its cardiovascular, renal and metabolism pipeline, including a partnership with Alnylam and the $2.7 billion acquisition of Carmot Therapeutics (搜索). Roche has also invested roughly $1.4 billion in a Basel research and development center with about 1,000 laboratory and office workplaces.
The project has grown substantially since it was first announced in March 2025, when Roche described a 30,000-square-foot lease and confirmed it would be the first company to join Harvard's Enterprise Research Campus. Reporting on the completed site places the footprint at roughly 100,000 square feet, with the expansion delivered in phases beginning in mid-2026, and describes it as among the largest life sciences deals in the region. The opening comes as Boston's life sciences real estate market records its highest inventory and vacancy levels among major biotech markets nationally.
State and City Response
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey welcomed the expansion. "Roche and Genentech's decision to expand their presence here is another powerful vote of confidence in Massachusetts and in the people who make our state a global center for discovery and innovation," Healey said. "We're proud to welcome this new Innovation Center and the groundbreaking research that will help shape the future of medicine."
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the innovation center will create hundreds of jobs, drive new investment and strengthen the city's life sciences ecosystem. US Representative Jake Auchincloss joined Roche leadership, Wu and Healey for a ribbon-cutting at the opening.
