Dawson joins Roche from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (搜索) in Victoria, Australia, where he served as Associate Director of Research and led the development of several first-in-class epigenetic therapies. These drugs, which affect transcription, DNA repair and DNA replication, have reached the clinical testing stage under his leadership.
Leadership Transition at Critical Time
The appointment comes as investors closely monitor Roche's pipeline ahead of patent expiries for major revenue drivers including multiple sclerosis (搜索) therapy Ocrevus (ocrelizumab), blood cancer (搜索) therapy Gazyva/Gazyvaro (obinutuzumab), and breast cancer (搜索) treatment Perjeta (pertuzumab).
Dawson replaces Hans Clevers, who retired as head of pRED in August 2025 after three years leading the division. A leading expert in cancer (搜索) biology, Dawson's work on chromatin (搜索) regulation and epigenetics has been instrumental in defining the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer initiation and progression. He holds a professorial appointment at the University of Melbourne and is an elected member of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).
Dawson earned his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1999, followed by specialist training in hematology and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. His career has been marked by prestigious international honors, including the Prime Minister's Prize for Science (Life Scientist of the Year, 2020), the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer (搜索) Research, the William Dameshek Prize from the American Society of Hematology, and recognition as a Howard Hughes International Research Scholar.
Overseeing Global Research Operations
Based in Basel, Dawson will oversee Roche's pRED division, which focuses on identifying and developing new therapeutic compounds from discovery through early clinical trials. The division serves as a bridge between the company and academic research groups across five global locations.
The Basel unit, which officially opened in 2024 and is located within Roche's headquarters campus, houses 1,800 scientists working across cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, immunology, infectious diseases, neurological diseases, oncology, ophthalmology, and rare diseases. This facility represents the largest and most recent addition to pRED's global footprint, joining existing centers in Zurich, Munich, New York, and Welwyn Garden City in the UK.
Dawson will also become a member of Roche's Enlarged Corporate Executive Committee, reflecting the strategic importance of the research division to the company's future growth prospects.
