Russia Completes First Production Batches of Personalized mRNA Cancer Vaccine

Russia's Gamaleya National Research Center (搜索) has successfully manufactured the first three validation batches of its personalized mRNA anti-cancer vaccine at a newly constructed production facility.
The Russian Ministry of Health (搜索) has granted clinical approvals for two personalized biotechnological cancer drugs, including the mRNA vaccine NeoOnkovac (搜索) and peptide vaccine Oncopept (搜索) for colorectal cancer.
The Hertsen Oncology Research Institute (搜索) has received complete regulatory authorization to implement the mRNA vaccine technology from diagnostics through production and human administration.
Russia has achieved a significant milestone in personalized cancer immunotherapy with the successful production of the first three validation batches of its mRNA anti-cancer vaccine at the Gamaleya National Research Center (搜索) for Epidemiology and Microbiology. Alexander Gintsburg, Director of the Gamaleya Center, announced this development at a scientific conference at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Ivannikov Institute for System Programming.
Production Facility Operational
The newly constructed mRNA vaccine production facility at the Gamaleya Center has been fully equipped and is now operational. "Funds were allocated to build out a production facility to make the mRNA vaccine at the Gamaleya Center. The factory has been built and fully equipped. Moreover, it has already manufactured three validation series," Gintsburg stated.
The facility represents a significant investment in Russia's biotechnology infrastructure, positioning the country to produce next-generation personalized cancer therapeutics domestically.
Regulatory Approvals Secured
In late November, the Russian Ministry of Health (搜索) granted clinical approvals for two personalized biotechnological cancer drugs. The antitumor mRNA vaccine NeoOnkovac (搜索) received approval for use by the National Medical Research Radiological Centre (NMRRC) and the Gamaleya Center. Additionally, the Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) received authorization to use the peptide vaccine Oncopept (搜索) for colorectal cancer, with production handled by the Scientific and Clinical Center for Physical and Chemical Medicine.
The Hertsen Oncology Research Institute (搜索), led by Academician Andrey Kaprin, has received the complete regulatory package for implementing the mRNA vaccine technology. "Our leading oncology center, the Hertsen Oncology Research Institute led by Academician [Andrey] Kaprin, has received the entire package of authorization documents to use this technology, from diagnostics to the production of mRNA and the use in people," Gintsburg confirmed.
Personalized Immunotherapy Approach
The mRNA vaccines represent a new generation of biotechnological drugs designed around individual patient tumor genetics. "Personalized mRNA vaccines are a new generation of biotechnological drugs created based on the individual genetic profile of a specific patient's tumor. Their task is to 'teach' the immune system to recognize tumor cells and target them for destruction," explained Andrey Kaprin, chief freelance oncologist of the Ministry of Health and head of the Radiology Center.
Existing Cancer Vaccine Portfolio
Russia has previously developed the Neooncovac (搜索) vaccine for treating melanoma, created jointly by the Gamaleya Center and the Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center (搜索). This vaccine, manufactured at the NMRRC, is indicated for adult patients with inoperable or metastatic melanoma, demonstrating Russia's expanding capabilities in cancer vaccine development across multiple tumor types.
