The approval allows Samsung Bioepis (search) to broaden its ophthalmic treatment offerings, building on its existing product, Byooviz (ranibizumab). Opuviz is a biosimilar to Eylea, a drug developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals that addresses conditions such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration (search) (AMD). Eylea functions by binding to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF (search)), thereby inhibiting the formation of abnormal blood vessels.

Aflibercept, the active ingredient in both Eylea and Opuviz, is a recombinant fusion protein that acts as a VEGF (search) inhibitor.
