Samsung Biologics Acquires First U.S. Manufacturing Facility for $280M in Maryland

Samsung Biologics, the world's largest contract development and manufacturing organization by capacity, is acquiring its first U.S. manufacturing facility from GSK for $280 million in Rockville, Maryland.
The two-building campus at 9911 Belward Campus Drive totals approximately 420,000 square feet with 60,000 liters of biomanufacturing capacity and will retain more than 500 employees.
The acquisition establishes Samsung Biologics' U.S. production footprint to serve customers domestically while supporting both clinical and commercial pharmaceutical production.
South Korean pharmaceutical giant Samsung Biologics has reached an agreement to acquire its first U.S. manufacturing facility for $280 million, purchasing the former Human Genome Sciences (搜索) campus in Rockville, Maryland, from GSK. The deal, expected to close next quarter, marks a significant expansion for the world's largest contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) by capacity.
Strategic U.S. Market Entry
The acquisition secures Samsung Biologics' first manufacturing base in the United States at a two-building campus located at 9911 Belward Campus Drive. The facility totals approximately 420,000 square feet with a combined 60,000 liters of biomanufacturing capacity, supporting both clinical and commercial production of pharmaceuticals.

Samsung Biologics currently operates 785,000 liters of capacity across its two major biomanufacturing campuses in Incheon, South Korea. The company specializes in monoclonal antibodies (搜索), antibody-drug conjugates (搜索), mRNA therapies (搜索) and next-generation treatments.
Workforce Retention and Facility Enhancement
Samsung Biologics expects to retain more than 500 employees at the Maryland facility and plans to further upgrade the facilities and bolster their production capacity. The company's decision to establish a U.S. production footprint comes in part to mitigate potential trade policy impacts, according to an unnamed Samsung Biologics official who spoke to The Korea Economic Daily.
GSK's Strategic Realignment
The sale represents part of GSK's broader strategic realignment in the United States. GSK acquired the property when it purchased Human Genome Sciences (搜索) in 2012. Despite committing to invest $30 billion in manufacturing and research and development in the U.S. over the next five years in September, GSK is consolidating its Maryland operations.
"Along with GSK's recent commitment to invest $30 billion in R&D and manufacturing in the US over the next five years, the [Samsung Biologics] deal enables us to further focus on building the agility, capacity and capability needed in our manufacturing network to deliver the next generation of specialty medicines and vaccines," said Regis Simard, GSK's president of global supply chain.
GSK is also exiting a separate Rockville R&D facility at 14200 Shady Grove Road, a 635,000 square foot property inherited with the Human Genome Sciences (搜索) acquisition. The company announced in February it would vacate the facility before its lease expires in summer 2026, as it expands its presence in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Biomanufacturing Investment Surge
The Samsung Biologics acquisition reflects a broader trend of significant biomanufacturing investments in the Maryland-Virginia corridor. Pharmaceutical giants including AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly and Merck (搜索) have announced multibillion-dollar investments in the region this year.
AstraZeneca announced a $50 billion boost to its U.S. investments by 2030 in July, including plans for a new $4.5 billion manufacturing facility in Albemarle County, Virginia, and expansion of its 1.3 million-square-foot life sciences campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
"Biomanufacturing is all the rage now," said South Duvall Vice President Matt Brown at Bisnow's Mid-Atlantic Life Sciences and Biotech Summit. "It's where the investment is going. It's where the capital is going."
The Maryland Life Sciences Corridor, spanning Rockville, Gaithersburg and East Baltimore, represents one of the country's largest biotechnology development hubs, benefiting from proximity to federal assets including the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration.
