Sensorion Secures €60M Funding Round Led by Sanofi to Advance Gene Therapy Pipeline for Hearing Loss
核心洞察
Sensorion raised €60 million through a reserved offering, with Sanofi contributing €20 million as a strategic investor to advance gene therapy programs for hearing disorders.
The funding will primarily support SENS-601 (搜索) (GJB2 (搜索)-GT) development targeting hearing loss from GJB2 mutations, including regulatory approvals and first patient enrollment.
Combined with existing cash reserves, the financing extends Sensorion's runway into the second half of 2027 to advance both SENS-501 and SENS-601 (搜索) gene therapies.
Montpellier-based biotech Sensorion has completed a €60 million ($71.9 million) reserved offering to accelerate development of its gene therapy pipeline targeting genetic forms of hearing loss. The financing includes a €20 million strategic investment from Sanofi alongside €40 million from existing and new investors including Artal (advised by Invus), Redmile Group, Cormorant Asset Management, Sofinnova Partners, Sphera Healthcare, and Coastlands Capital.
The offering involved issuing 214,285,714 new ordinary shares at €0.28 per share, with settlement expected around January 30, 2026, subject to customary conditions. Combined with approximately €47.3 million in existing cash reserves as of December 31, 2025, Sensorion expects the funding will support operations into the second half of 2027.
Strategic Focus on SENS-601 Development
The new capital will primarily advance SENS-601 (搜索) (GJB2 (搜索)-GT), Sensorion's gene therapy targeting hearing loss associated with GJB2 mutations. Key near-term milestones include obtaining Clinical Trial Application (CTA) and Investigational New Drug (IND) approvals, followed by enrolling the initial clinical cohort. SENS-601 is designed to treat congenital deafness, progressive hearing loss in children, and early presbycusis in adults.
"With the additional capital, the company plans to intensify the ongoing efforts to progress the research and development of SENS-601 (搜索), including the advancement of the programme into its clinical development, and to continue the clinical development of the SENS-501 programme," said Nawal Ouzren, CEO of Sensorion.
SENS-601 (搜索) represents Sensorion's second gene therapy candidate to progress toward clinical trials, following SENS-501, which entered clinical development in 2024.
Clinical Progress with SENS-501
Sensorion's lead program SENS-501 (OTOF-GT) targets otoferlin (搜索) deficiency and has already demonstrated encouraging safety data. Three patients aged between 6 and 31 months have been treated with SENS-501 gene therapy, with the company reporting that "the surgical procedure was well tolerated, and intra-cochlear administration of SENS-501 was uneventful, and no serious adverse events or serious side effects have been reported."
The company anticipates sharing six-month follow-up data from the second cohort of the Phase 1/2 Audiogene trial in the coming months. Additionally, Sensorion plans to report Phase 2a results from the Notoxis study of SENS-401, a small-molecule therapy for cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.
Growing Interest in Genetic Hearing Loss Treatments
The funding announcement coincides with increasing industry focus on gene therapies for hearing disorders. On the same day, Seamless Therapeutics announced a worldwide strategic research and licensing agreement with Eli Lilly to develop programmable, recombinase-based gene therapy for selected forms of genetically caused hearing loss.
Sensorion's approach utilizes well-established AAV-based gene therapies, which have a longer track record in humans compared to newer technologies like CRISPR/Cas systems. However, AAV-based approaches can trigger immune responses that may limit effectiveness or prevent repeat dosing.
Financial Allocation and Strategic Outlook
Approximately €56 million of the net proceeds will fund research and development for gene therapy programs SENS-501 and SENS-601 (搜索), with additional allocation for general R&D and corporate expenses. The company continues to seek non-dilutive financing for other assets in its pipeline.
"We welcome Sanofi's new strategic investment in Sensorion to advance our pipeline of innovative therapies intended to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from hearing disorders," Ouzren stated. "This marks an important milestone for the company's corporate growth trajectory and for patients suffering from a variety of hearing loss disorders."
The strategic partnership with Sanofi, alongside support from established healthcare investors, positions Sensorion to advance its genetic medicine pipeline through critical regulatory and clinical milestones over the coming months.
