Sharp Rise in Type 2 Diabetes Among Young Women in England Sparks Concern

England is witnessing a "worrying increase" in young women developing type 2 diabetes (search), according to new research from Imperial College London that challenges long-held assumptions about the disease as a condition of later life.
An analysis of NHS data spanning 2011 to 2024, drawn from the English National Diabetes Audit, found a 69 percent increase in new diagnoses of type 2 diabetes (search) among women aged 20 to 29. The rise in young men of the same age was 43 percent, suggesting the overall trend toward more cases in younger people is being disproportionately driven by women.
"This is really worrying given the poor health outcomes from early-onset type 2 diabetes (search)," said Dr Shivani Misra, the lead researcher at Imperial College London.
The findings mark a significant epidemiological shift. While older adults still account for the largest proportion of new diagnoses—and rates are actually decreasing slightly in that group—the disease is increasing rapidly in people under 40. NHS England estimates that 12,000 people under the age of 30 are now living with type 2 diabetes (search), with women making up more of those younger cases.
Obesity (search) as a driving factor
The researchers point to rising obesity (search) levels as a central explanation. Body mass index at diagnosis has been increasing more quickly among younger adults than in older age groups. Separate NHS data for England show that between 2019 and 2025, new obesity cases rose by 16 percent in people aged 20 to 29 and nearly 20 percent in those aged 30 to 39, while rates fell among adults aged 60 to 79.
"We think that the earlier onset of severe obesity (search) in young people is increasing their type 2 diabetes (search) risk in early life and pulling down their age at diagnosis," Dr Misra said.
The rise has largely occurred since the Covid pandemic. Obesity (search) rates in England have worsened during this period, with nearly one in three people now affected.
Dr Misra noted that much of the discussion about rising rates among younger people has historically focused on ethnic minority groups, which have been considered at higher risk. However, the new data suggests the trend extends well beyond those communities.
The burden of early-onset disease
Type 2 diabetes (search) develops when the body stops responding to, or producing enough of, the hormone insulin, causing blood sugar levels to rise. When the condition emerges in a person's 20s, it means potentially 40 or 50 years of raised blood sugar, during which damage accumulates quietly in the small vessels of the eyes and kidneys, in the nerves of the feet, and in the arteries of the heart.
Diabetes UK (search) calculates that every week in the country, type 2 diabetes (search) leads to 184 amputations, more than 1,010 strokes, 700 heart attacks, and 3,340 cases of heart failure. The charity warns that when the disease develops at a younger age, it tends to be more aggressive, raising the risk of devastating complications and cutting lives short.
About 90 percent of the six million people in the UK living with diabetes have the type 2 form of the disease.
Recognizing the subtle signs
One of the greatest challenges is that the symptoms can be easily overlooked or misattributed. A thirst that never settles, increased urination, fatigue that sleep does not resolve, blurred vision, and slow-healing cuts can all signal the arrival of type 2 diabetes (search). Women should also be alert to recurrent episodes of thrush and repeated urinary infections, which can be early consequences of raised sugar levels in the urine.
Polycystic ovary syndrome and gestational diabetes also confer a raised risk of type 2 and tend to be picked up in this age group.
A reversible condition
Despite the concerning trends, there is hopeful news. Type 2 diabetes (search) can be reversed, and this is easier for a younger person to achieve than an older one. The groundbreaking DiRECT trial, published in 2018, demonstrated that 46 percent of volunteers who had been newly diagnosed with type 2 put the condition into remission within a year following a low-calorie soup and shakes diet for up to five months. Success rates were closely linked to the amount of weight lost: 57 percent of those who lost between 10kg and 15kg reversed their type 2 diabetes.
This approach now forms the basis of the NHS Type 2 Diabetes (search) Pathway to Remission programme.
The researchers also suggest that newer obesity (search) treatments, such as GLP-1 (search) receptor agonists, might help alongside healthy eating advice. Diabetes UK (search) offers a free online risk score tool, and a simple blood test at a GP surgery can provide a definitive answer.
"It is vital that those at risk are diagnosed early to prevent long-term organ damage," Diabetes UK (search) emphasizes. Caught in time, type 2 diabetes (search) remains one of the few serious diseases that can still be pushed back—and that is easiest to do at exactly the age many still overlook.
