The regulatory clearance allows SHINE to sell Lu-177 throughout the European Union, addressing growing global demand for this critical cancer treatment isotope.
The European approval coincides with SHINE's strategic expansion into diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals. In January, the company acquired an established U.S. isotope manufacturing and distribution facility, adding operational scale across diagnostic isotopes including Tc-99m (search) generators, cardiac and neuroimaging agents, and Xe-133 (search) for pulmonary imaging used in millions of procedures annually.

Advanced Production Capabilities
SHINE produces Ilumira (search) at its Cassiopeia facility in Janesville, Wisconsin, one of North America's largest non-carrier-added Lu-177 production sites. The facility utilizes proprietary processes to provide commercial-scale supply for the global radiopharmaceutical market, with capacity adjustment capabilities based on demand for approved Lu-177 therapies.
Ilumira (search) is manufactured under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards and meets European Pharmacopeia requirements. As a non-carrier-added product, Ilumira achieves ≥99.9% radionuclidic purity and high specific activity, characteristics that distinguish it from carrier-added alternatives. SHINE is among the few lutetium producers that recycles ytterbium (Yb-176), the starter material for all non-carrier-added Lu-177, resulting in reduced waste and improved efficiency.
Strategic Growth and Investment
The EMA approval represents the latest milestone in SHINE's nuclear medicine platform expansion. The company closed a $240 million Series E funding round led by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in February, including a strategic partnership with NantWorks (search) featuring priority access to SHINE's Lu-177 supply for advancing targeted cancer treatments.
SHINE also received a $263 million conditional loan commitment from the U.S. Department of Energy in April to complete Chrysalis, designed to become the world's largest medical isotope production site. The fusion-fission hybrid facility will produce molybdenum-99, the parent isotope of Tc-99m (search) used in SHINE's SPECT products, creating an integrated supply chain from isotope production to diagnostic manufacturing.
Addressing Critical Market Needs
Lu-177 is one of the most widely used isotopes in targeted cancer therapy, delivering potent radiation to tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue when paired with targeting ligands. The isotope serves as a nuclear precursor in several radiopharmaceuticals with approved and investigational uses across prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors, with expanding indications.
Global demand for Lu-177 is increasing rapidly, but supply has been unstable. Most Lu-177 produced today is carrier-added with lower radionuclidic purity, containing non-therapeutic lutetium isotopes alongside active material. Non-carrier-added Lu-177 separates these components for higher radionuclidic purity and more concentrated active material.
