Piper was just 16 months old when she received a diagnosis of neuroblastoma (search), a rare pediatric cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. After conventional cancer treatments failed to improve her condition, her family made the difficult decision to pursue an investigational therapy through a clinical trial.
"That decision — and those treatments — saved Piper's life," event organizers noted.
The drug at the center of Piper's recovery is difluoromethylornithine (search) (DFMO). According to an article published by the National Library of Medicine cited in the report, DFMO is designed to slow cancer cell growth by blocking a key enzyme that some tumors rely on to produce "growth helper" compounds. Piper's mother, Rhonda Diamond, recalled the dire prognosis the family initially received. "I was told she wouldn't make it," Diamond said. "And here she is at six, and she's glowing."
Diamond reflected on the decision to enroll her daughter in the trial, saying she had hoped for a meaningful outcome regardless of the result. "I figured that whether she come out of this on a positive note or a negative note, either way it was going to save some lives, hopefully," she said. "And it turned out that it wound up saving her life so she could save others."
The recognition came as part of the O'Neal Cancer Center's fourth annual O'Neal Iron Strong Awards luncheon, an event that honors cancer survivors whose participation in clinical trials contributed not only to their own care but also to the advancement of future cancer treatment. Organizers said the Iron Strong Award honorees embody the center's motto: "Difficulties may deter them, but difficulties do not deter us."
