Summit Therapeutics on Wednesday pulled plans for a $500 million secondary share offering it had announced just one day earlier, a sharp reversal that underscores the uncertainty surrounding its lead experimental lung cancer drug, ivonescimab. The Florida-based company attributed the cancellation to "market conditions."
The proposed offering was unveiled nine days after Summit's partner Akeso (search) detailed positive data from a China-based Phase 3 lung cancer trial of ivonescimab, a bispecific antibody targeting both PD-1 (search) and VEGF (search). The drug is currently in a global Phase 3 trial that the partners hope will support Food and Drug Administration approval.
A missed interim mark and mounting debate
The share sale cancellation comes against a backdrop of mixed clinical signals. Data from the China-based late-stage trial were fully outlined at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting, after which Summit's shares slumped. Separately, the global Phase 3 HARMONi-3 study — which pairs ivonescimab with chemotherapy against Merck & Co. (search)'s Keytruda in front-line non-small cell lung cancer (search) — failed to show the combination was superior to Keytruda alone at an interim analysis check in the weeks leading up to ASCO.
Summit had previously revealed plans to conduct an interim analysis in a particular subgroup of patients within HARMONi-3, a strategy designed to potentially enable a faster path to regulatory approval if results were clearly positive. On Thursday, however, Summit disclosed that ivonescimab missed that statistical significance mark, and a final analysis will now be conducted in the second half of the year.
Stifel analyst Dara Azar characterized the disclosure as a "self-inflicted narrative complication," writing that some investors are left questioning why Summit created a situation that offered "more risk than regulatory upside" in the first place.
Financial position and runway
Summit is not in immediate need of capital. The company held nearly $600 million in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments as of March 31. However, it is spending hundreds of millions of dollars annually on research and development and other expenses. A Leerink Partners forecast earlier this year suggested Summit might be close to exhausting its cash pile in 2027, coinciding with anticipated regulatory review and early commercialization activities.
The cancellation occurred even as the broader biotechnology fundraising environment remains healthy, with a closely watched index of biotech company share prices now more than 30% higher than it was a year ago. Summit's stock, however, has diverged from this trend as mixed data for ivonescimab has emerged and debate over its promise has simmered among both investors and physicians.
