Lauren McNamer, General Manager of Lilly Switzerland and newly appointed Interpharma (search) board member, delivered a stark assessment: "Despite being a highly innovative country, with a proud history of pharmaceutical industry-driven economic strength, and high purchasing power, Switzerland has neglected the opportunity to keep its healthcare system prepared for the wave of breakthrough therapies which have become available in recent years – and the many more which are coming soon."
Access slowdown and the MFN chilling effect
McNamer pointed to clear data indicating an access slowdown is underway, noting that patients in Switzerland "often wait longer for new therapies than in neighbouring countries." She cautioned that current KVV revision proposals "would move Switzerland even further in the wrong direction."
Central to the concern is Switzerland's role as a Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) reference country in international drug pricing. McNamer described this as "the most urgent pressure point," warning that it is "already creating a chilling effect on launch decisions." The consequences of companies deprioritizing Switzerland for early launches would extend beyond the pharmaceutical sector, "affecting not just the industry but tax revenues, research investment, and jobs across cantons."
The value conversation and cost containment
Michele Ravara, General Manager of AbbVie (search) Switzerland and fellow new Interpharma (search) board member, echoed these concerns from a complementary angle. "I observe with concern how public debate is increasingly gravitating towards cost, rather than the broader value these therapies create for patients and the healthcare system as a whole," Ravara said. "A treatment that prevents unnecessary hospitalizations or significantly improves quality of life is worth far more. Shifting that conversation is close to my heart."
Ravara identified "one-sided cost containment pressure focused exclusively on medical innovation" as the greatest challenge for pharmaceutical companies operating in Switzerland. He cautioned that other countries have "lost access to new, innovative therapies by adopting an overly narrow definition of innovation," emphasizing that "innovation and sustainability are not mutually exclusive."
Structural reform and financing innovation
Both leaders called for structural reforms to address systemic challenges. McNamer highlighted that the per-capita premium model "structurally limits the country's willingness to invest in innovative medicines," advocating for new financing mechanisms including "tax-based funding and cantonal lighthouse projects."
She acknowledged Switzerland's progress in creating a national Life Science Strategy Working Group but stressed that "the real test will be whether Swiss leaders translate its recommendations into concrete policy action, rather than allowing it to become a document that signals ambition without delivering change."
Ravara similarly emphasized the need for forward-looking solutions, noting that "a healthcare system that has not undergone significant reform for 30 years needs forward-looking solutions and a regulatory framework robust enough to withstand potential international pressure."
Strengthening clinical research
On the research front, Ravara underscored Switzerland's untapped potential: "Switzerland has extraordinary potential in this area, thanks to its universities, institutes, and talent. We need to build on that foundation and create an ecosystem that fosters innovation while remaining financially sustainable for the population."
McNamer, drawing on 14 years at Lilly spanning pricing and reimbursement strategy in the U.S., corporate business development across oncology, neuroscience, immunology, and genetic medicine, and now leading the Swiss commercial affiliate, emphasized her international perspective. "I approach Switzerland's market access challenges not just as a local affiliate concern, but with a view across the full value chain: from how innovation is discovered and financed, to how it is priced, reimbursed, and ultimately reaches patients."
