Thousand Oaks Facility Targets Hunter Syndrome
The centerpiece of Takeda's California expansion is a 15,000-square-foot addition devoted exclusively to manufacturing therapies for rare diseases (search). The four-year construction project also included renovations to existing facilities and the addition of solar arrays. With the expansion now operational, total employment at the Thousand Oaks manufacturing plant has reached approximately 500 people.
The facility will initially focus on producing treatments for Hunter syndrome (search), an extremely rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from breaking down complex sugars. With roughly 2,000 known cases worldwide, Hunter syndrome represents the type of ultra-rare condition that Takeda has developed enzyme replacement therapy (search) to address.

Swiss Facility Enhances Global Production Capacity
Simultaneously, Takeda opened its new biotechnology facility in Neuchâtel, representing the largest investment ever made at the Swiss site. The $200 million facility features an aseptic filling line designed to strengthen Takeda's capacity to deliver therapies to patients in over 80 countries.
The new aseptic filling plant houses multiple production processes, including formulation, filling, freeze-drying, sealing, and automated quality control. The facility incorporates advanced automation and digitalization technologies, positioning it as what Takeda calls a "factory of the future."

Strategic Manufacturing Network Expansion
The dual facility openings reflect Takeda's strategic focus on rare disease therapeutics, an area where the company has established significant expertise. Takeda's Thousand Oaks presence dates back to 1996, when it established a small manufacturing facility on property owned by Baxter International (search). The company acquired the property in 2019 after Baxter spun off the site.
The original Thousand Oaks facility has specialized in manufacturing therapies for blood disorders (search), while the new expansion broadens the site's capabilities into additional rare disease areas.
In Switzerland, Takeda operates with more than 650 employees, making it one of the 10 largest employers in the canton of Neuchâtel. The company runs its Swiss headquarters in Opfikon in the canton of Zurich.

The manufacturing expansions come as the biotechnology industry continues significant investment in specialized production capabilities. Just four weeks before Takeda's Thousand Oaks ribbon-cutting, Amgen announced the beginning of construction on a $600 million research and development center on its headquarters campus in the same city.
