Temple's 'Entropy' Biomarker Claim Sparks Debate: Wearable Startup Promises Real-Time Metabolic Scoring, Doctors Demand Evidence

The announcement, made via social media on Thursday, has ignited both excitement and sharp criticism from the medical community.
The biomarker is measured exclusively on the temple (搜索) region of the head using Temple's wearable device. Displayed as a live score on the device's home screen, Entropy ranges from 1 to 250 and updates every second. According to Goyal, a score of 1 represents the deepest state of rest the company has recorded—achieved only briefly by highly experienced meditators—while a score of 250 reflects the peak output observed in elite athletes during intense performance.
"The Temple (搜索) team has made a breakthrough. We have discovered (literally discovered) a biomarker, only readable on the temple region, and nowhere else, that measures the real-time cost of you being alive. We are calling it Entropy," Goyal wrote in a post on X.
The Promise Behind the Metric
Temple (搜索) positions Entropy as a comprehensive physiological indicator influenced by sleep, stress, exercise, food, caffeine, meditation, and even cold-water exposure. The company argues that the metric reflects changes in metabolism and energy expenditure in real time, claiming it is far more accurate than heart rate for measuring the body's metabolic state.
Goyal cited internal testing against a metabolic cart—a laboratory device used to measure energy expenditure—asserting that Entropy closely tracked the calorimeter's readings during more than 100 cardio sessions.
The company has introduced two derivative concepts: "Entropy Maxima," representing the highest output a person can achieve during exertion, and "Entropy Minima," measuring the body's lowest resting metabolic state. "Your Entropy Maxima is the highest your body can reach when you push it hard. A high peak is the signature of a capable body, one that can rise to meet effort and recover from it. As we age, that ceiling naturally falls, so this is the number to push upwards," Goyal explained. He added that a lower Entropy Minima may correlate with longevity, noting that "across the animal world, a lower cost of being alive at rest tends to go with a longer life."
Medical Experts Voice Skepticism
The announcement has drawn scrutiny from medical professionals who emphasize that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Hyderabad-based senior neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar told India Today that while the concept is intriguing, the evidence presented falls short of proving the claims. "The idea of developing a novel physiological metric from signals recorded over the temple (搜索) region is certainly intriguing, and advances in wearable technology have the potential to improve our understanding of human physiology. However, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence," he said.
Dr. Kumar noted that showing a correlation with calorimetry during exercise represents only an initial step. A single statistical relationship does not automatically establish a measurement as accurate, reliable, or clinically useful. He stressed that critical information remains unavailable: the biological basis of the metric, the methodology used to derive it, validation studies, and peer-reviewed scientific data have not yet been publicly released.
The temple (搜索) region, where the device is worn, contains blood vessels, muscles, skin structures, and nerve fibers. Dr. Kumar acknowledged that signals collected there may indeed reflect physiological changes linked to stress, exercise, or metabolism. However, he emphasized that "detecting a signal and proving the existence of a new biomarker are two very different things."
"The key questions are not whether the signal changes with exercise, stress, or meditation, but whether it reliably measures what it claims to measure, whether it adds information beyond existing metrics, and whether acting on it improves health outcomes," Dr. Kumar said, adding that those answers can only come from rigorous research, peer review, and independent replication.
Neurologist Dr. Rahul Chawala was more blunt, stating that the public announcement provides too little information for meaningful scientific evaluation. "Nothing can be said based on this post – he has not revealed any methodology, what they are testing..just giving a fancy name..(We) need research and more details to comment," he said. Dr. Chawala argued that bold claims without publicly available evidence should be treated cautiously, describing what he sees as a growing tendency in the technology world to generate excitement before presenting proof.
Earlier criticism has also come from within India's medical establishment. In January, Dr. Suvrankar Datta, a radiologist at AIIMS Delhi, reportedly described Temple (搜索) as a "fancy toy for billionaires" possessing "zero scientific standing" as a medical instrument.
Company Response and Next Steps
In response to queries from India Today, Temple (搜索) stressed that evidence will be published before the public launch of the device, and that reputed third-party international institutes are conducting studies to validate its claims. "We will publish internal whitepapers soon, and these external studies will be submitted to journals for peer review," a Temple spokesperson said.
The announcement comes approximately one month after Goyal disclosed that Temple (搜索) had received more than 100,000 applications for device access, with only 100 users selected. The company has not yet disclosed a launch timeline, pricing, or peer-reviewed scientific validation of the Entropy biomarker.
