Teva and Royalty Pharma Announce $500 Million Funding Agreement for Vitiligo Treatment TEV-'408
核心洞察
Teva Pharmaceuticals and Royalty Pharma announced a $500 million funding agreement to accelerate development of TEV-'408 (搜索), an anti-IL-15 (搜索) monoclonal antibody for vitiligo (搜索) treatment.
The agreement includes $75 million for Phase 2b studies starting in 2026, with an option for an additional $425 million to fund Phase 3 development based on results.
TEV-'408 (搜索) targets IL-15 (搜索), a key cytokine in immune-mediated pathways, and is currently in Phase 1b trials for vitiligo (搜索) and Phase 2a for celiac disease (搜索).
Teva Pharmaceuticals and Royalty Pharma announced a strategic funding agreement worth up to $500 million to accelerate the clinical development of TEV-'408 (搜索), an investigational anti-IL-15 (搜索) monoclonal antibody for treating vitiligo (搜索). The collaboration represents a significant investment in addressing the substantial unmet medical need for systemic vitiligo treatments.
Strategic Partnership Details
Under the agreement terms, Royalty Pharma will provide $75 million in R&D co-funding to conduct a Phase 2b study targeted to begin in 2026. Following Phase 2b results, Royalty Pharma holds an option to provide an additional $425 million to co-fund the Phase 3 development program. Upon approval and launch, Teva will pay milestone payments and royalties on worldwide net sales to Royalty Pharma.
"Strategic collaborations fuel innovation. This agreement with Royalty Pharma enables us to advance our science more efficiently and accelerate our pipeline to deliver meaningful solutions for patients worldwide," said Richard Francis, Teva's President and CEO.
Pablo Legorreta, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Royalty Pharma, emphasized the collaboration's significance: "Vitiligo (搜索) is a chronic autoimmune skin disease that can have a profound emotional and psychosocial burden, yet current treatment options are insufficient. Our continued collaboration underscores Royalty Pharma's role as a long-term, trusted partner with a focus on funding innovation in potentially transformative and practice changing therapies."
TEV-'408 Mechanism and Development Status
TEV-'408 (搜索) is an investigational human monoclonal antibody designed to inhibit interleukin-15 (搜索) (IL-15 (搜索)), a cytokine involved in immune-mediated pathways. The drug candidate demonstrates high affinity and potency in vitro, along with a prolonged half-life and planned convenient self-administration option for patients.
The antibody is currently in Phase 1b trials (NCT06625177) for vitiligo (搜索) treatment and Phase 2a studies (NCT06807463) for celiac disease (搜索). TEV-'408 (搜索) received Fast Track designation from the U.S. FDA in May 2025 for celiac disease. Emerging Phase 1b data from the ongoing vitiligo study provides preliminary support for IL-15 (搜索) as a potential therapeutic target for treating various autoimmune conditions. Teva anticipates sharing results from TEV-'408 trials during 2026.
By blocking IL-15 (搜索) activity, TEV-'408 (搜索) aims to reduce the immune-mediated destruction of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) that results in the characteristic white patches of vitiligo (搜索), or reduce IL-15-driven intestinal inflammation and damage in celiac disease (搜索).
Addressing Significant Unmet Medical Need
Vitiligo (搜索) is a chronic autoimmune skin disease characterized by the loss of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), resulting in white patches that can appear anywhere on the body. The condition affects people of all ages, skin types, and ethnicities, with an estimated global prevalence of 0.5% to 2%, though many individuals remain undiagnosed.
Beyond its physical manifestations, vitiligo (搜索) imposes a significant emotional and psychosocial burden, with many patients experiencing anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Current treatment options remain severely limited, with only one topical therapy approved and its use restricted to treating up to 10% of the body surface area. As a result, many people with vitiligo remain insufficiently treated, highlighting the critical need for a systemic, durable, effective, and safe therapy that addresses both visible skin changes and overall quality of life.
Supporting Innovation Strategy
The funding agreement aligns with Teva's Pivot to Growth strategy to accelerate its innovative pipeline and bring treatments to patients faster. Richard Francis noted that "Vitiligo (搜索) represents a significant unmet need, with only one approved topical treatment currently available and no systemic options. We are dedicated to driving scientific progress that brings new, effective therapies to people living with chronic autoimmune diseases."
This marks the second collaboration between Teva and Royalty Pharma, demonstrating the companies' continued partnership in advancing innovative therapeutic development. The agreement enables Teva to advance its anti-IL-15 (搜索) program more efficiently while providing Royalty Pharma with potential returns from a promising autoimmune therapy targeting a significant market opportunity.
