Political Pressure Behind the Push
In recent months, Trump has pressed senior officials, including US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to prioritize greater scrutiny of vaccines — even as many of his aides and political advisers fear that elevating the issue could damage Republicans ahead of November's midterm elections.
Kennedy, who was a prominent anti-vaccine activist before joining Trump's Cabinet, vowed during his first days in office to significantly expand the government's study of autism (search), including launching new efforts to investigate vaccines. However, that effort has moved slowly in the months since, spurring frustration among some White House and health officials that HHS does not yet have any significant progress for the administration to tout, two administration officials said.
Kennedy's initial efforts last year to overhaul the government's approach toward vaccines and recommend fewer shots for children prompted sharp blowback, angering the deep-pocketed pharmaceutical industry and alienating a swath of voters across bipartisan lines. The repercussions eventually prompted Trump officials to urge Kennedy's HHS to shift its focus toward more mainstream issues ahead of the administration's midterm push, such as drug pricing and health insurance.
Yet behind the scenes, Trump has continued to press Kennedy and others for more action on vaccines, focusing in particular on efforts to investigate the causes of autism (search). Trump has suggested on multiple occasions that there could be a link between vaccines and autism, despite extensive research that has found no connection.
"I believe in vaccines, but I don't believe that, you know, you have to have a mandate for all of them," Trump said in a May interview with Sharyl Attkisson. "I really feel that vaccines, if they were given in smaller quantities — they want to cut some out, and that's good, too. I agree with that."

Scientific Evidence Contradicts Vaccine-Autism Claims
An overwhelming majority of experts agree that vaccines do not cause autism (search). Autism originates in early brain development prior to birth and is influenced by various factors, including genetics and environmental exposure. Despite this fact, researchers are tasked with debunking misinformation about potential causes of autism.
A large study of more than 2.5 million U.S. children found no link between the timing of a first measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine (search) before age 2 and a later autism (search) diagnosis. Any studies linking vaccines to autism have been refuted by experts over flawed or insufficient data.
"The scientific community has researched this very thoroughly, and there's no evidence that childhood vaccines cause autism (search)," said Danelle Fisher, MD, FAAP, board certified pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.
In 2025, the Trump Administration ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (search) to research the so-called autism (search)-vaccine link, despite robust evidence showing no such association.
Expert Guidance for Parents
Fisher said that parents should trust their pediatrician above all other sources of information, including social media, which is often ripe with misinformation. She noted that if parents wish to gather information about vaccines for themselves, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) (search) is a good place to start, as it has the most up-to-date scientific explanations of vaccines, giving parents a source of information trusted by physicians.
Graham Tse, MD, pediatrician and chief medical officer of MemorialCare Miller Children's & Women's Hospital in Long Beach, CA, said that vaccines are one of the easiest ways to ensure the health of children and the community. "They are supported by science, evidence, and years of history to back up their effectiveness," he told Healthline.
Vaccines are widely regarded as safe and effective. Still, vaccine skepticism and hesitancy persist, contributing to low childhood vaccination rates in the United States. Declining childhood vaccines, experts say, are largely responsible for the resurgence of infectious diseases like measles.
