Cornell-Akston Weekly Injection Trial
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has initiated a clinical study evaluating AKS-562c (搜索), an Fc-fusion GLP-1 candidate developed by Akston (搜索). The trial, led by Patrick Carney, DVM, PhD, aims to enroll 70 client-owned cats with an option to expand to 140 participants over an approximately 11-week treatment period.

According to Akston (搜索), preclinical data from laboratory cats at Cornell demonstrated reductions in voluntary food intake without adverse effects or "unanticipated events," with pharmacokinetic analysis supporting once-weekly dosing.

Okava's Implant-Based Approach
Okava Pharmaceuticals (搜索) has launched MEOW-1, described as the first-ever weight loss trial using a miniature implant approach in household pets. The study will examine up to 50 cats receiving OKV-119 (搜索), a miniature implant that delivers GLP-1 continuously for up to six months using exenatide as the active ingredient.
The trial will monitor cats for weight changes at three months, with evaluation continuing for the full six-month implant duration. Okava CEO Michael Klotsman indicated the company plans to file for FDA approval between 2027 and 2028, targeting an out-of-pocket cost of approximately $100 per month for pet owners.
Clinical Significance and Market Need
The trials address a substantial clinical problem, with surveillance by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention finding that 61% of evaluated US cats were classified as overweight or having obesity in 2022. Despite improving owner recognition, the 2024 Pet Weight & Nutrition Opinion Survey showed only 33% of US cat owners categorized their cats as overweight or obese, indicating continued gaps in problem recognition.
Excess adiposity in cats is linked to multiple pathologies, most notably insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus, orthopedic disease, and decreased physiological reserve. Recent veterinary reviews emphasize that obese cats are 7 times more likely to develop diabetes and other metabolic disturbances.
Therapeutic Mechanisms and Expected Outcomes
Both approaches leverage GLP-1 receptor agonists' established mechanisms of action, which reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying via central and peripheral pathways that increase satiety and reduce caloric intake. In human medicine, these agents have demonstrated clinically meaningful weight loss with acceptable safety profiles when used within appropriate monitoring frameworks.
Okava claims several therapeutic advantages for GLP-1 treatment in pets, including "reduced risk of diabetes through improved glucose metabolism," "decreased osteoarthritic pain and inflammation," "enhanced cardiovascular function," and "better insulin sensitivity." The company expects pet owners to observe "meaningful behavioral changes," including reduced food-motivated behaviors, less begging, reduced scavenging, and better portion control.
Development Pipelines
Akston (搜索) is also advancing a related GLP-1 program for dogs using the same Fc-fusion platform, which is approximately 6 months behind the feline program. Similarly, Okava plans to study dogs following their feline trials.
