University of Toronto and McMaster University announced Wednesday they are anchoring a new $40-million venture capital fund managed by Toronto-based Genesys Capital (search), marking the first time either institution has directly backed a VC fund. The Genesys University Seed Fund has already secured a first close of more than $30 million from limited partners and aims to reverse the long-standing pattern of Canadian discoveries being commercialized abroad.
The fund will focus on seed-stage life sciences startups, primarily spinouts from both universities and their partner hospitals, developing medical devices and drugs targeting cancer (search) and heart and brain ailments (search). Genesys Capital (search) plans to invest up to $1 million apiece in 10 to 15 startups, with the capacity to deploy up to $5 million into its most promising portfolio companies.
Funding Structure and Key Backers
U of T will bankroll 20 percent of the fund, contributing up to $8 million, while McMaster University commits $5 million. Both institutions are financing their stakes using revenues from their technology transfer offices, which license patents generated by academics for commercial use. The Ontario government, through its Venture Ontario arm, is contributing up to $10 million as part of a broader provincial strategy to strengthen the life sciences sector. Additional investors include the Temerty family—the primary benefactor of U of T's medical school—and Royal Bank of Canada.
Genesys Capital (search), which manages a $150-million core fund that will co-invest on select university fund deals, will receive a 2-percent annual management fee and 20 percent of realized gains, consistent with standard VC fund structures.
Addressing a Persistent Funding Gap
The initiative targets a well-documented deficit in Canadian life sciences commercialization. Ontario is one of North America's largest life sciences clusters, home to nearly 76,000 workers across more than 2,000 firms. Yet scarce early-stage funding has consistently driven promising innovators to relocate to Boston or Silicon Valley.
"Canada has no shortage of ideas or talent; what we lack is the capital to scale them," said U of T president Melanie Woodin. "We generate a lot of intellectual property. We want that to benefit Canadians in terms of financial success and health and societal impact, more than has been the case. That's what we're trying to turn around."
McMaster president Susan Tighe emphasized the mission-driven nature of the collaboration: "This fund is about strengthening that mission" of advancing discoveries to "have real-world impact."
A Growing University-Anchored VC Movement
The Genesys fund builds on a broader trend of Canadian universities stepping into venture capital. University of Calgary has launched seven donor-backed seed funds this decade, including three in life sciences. University of Waterloo's endowment fund anchored a VC fund spun out of its Velocity incubator in 2025. The B.C. government's InBC Investment Corp. recently launched two funds to finance spinouts from University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, with the schools investing $10 million and $7.5 million respectively.
The Genesys fund was inspired by similar models anchored by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley. Genesys managing director Kelly Holman described the partnership as "a big signal from the universities and the Ontario government of the importance of this work and its long-term potential for our economy."
Track Record and Strategic Rationale
U of T selected Genesys Capital (search) based on the firm's demonstrated success in life sciences venture. Genesys booked significant returns when two drug companies it launched—Inversago Pharma (search) and Fusion Pharmaceuticals (search)—sold for ten-figure sums in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Fusion Pharmaceuticals is based at McMaster, a connection that helped bring the Hamilton university into the partnership.
"We thought, the more the merrier, the more diverse the deal flow we have," said Holman, adding that the fund will also consider investment opportunities outside the two anchor universities.
The fund arrives against a backdrop of modest Canadian university commercialization revenues. U of T and McMaster each typically generate $10 million or less in annual licensing revenue from campus inventions, compared with MIT's US$60.9 million in 2025, Stanford University's US$87 million, and Harvard University's five-year average of US$95.5 million. No Canadian institution appeared on the National Academy of Inventors' 2025 list of the top 100 worldwide universities granted U.S. utility patents.
If the Genesys University Seed Fund proves successful, U of T president Woodin indicated the university may back additional funds to finance spinouts across other sectors, following global attention garnered by several tech startups founded by its students and professors, including Xanadu Quantum Technologies, Cohere, and Waabi Innovation.
