Variant Bio (搜索) has expanded its multi-year research collaboration and license agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim into cardiovascular disease (搜索), extending a partnership that previously focused on kidney disease (搜索). The Seattle-based genomics and AI drug discovery company announced the expansion on Sept. 23, 2026, stating that the collaboration will apply its Inference platform to discover and validate novel targets for cardiovascular disease.
Under the terms of the expanded agreement, Variant Bio (搜索) will receive an additional upfront payment and is eligible for potential license and milestone payments totaling over $250 million. The upfront amount was not disclosed. The original collaboration focused on cardiorenal and kidney disease (搜索), with potential payments exceeding $120 million (€105 million).
Platform and Approach
The Inference platform conducts end-to-end genomic analysis using proprietary genomic, deep-phenotyping and multi-omic data from studies involving diverse populations worldwide. According to Variant Bio (搜索), the platform combines large language models, machine learning and statistical genetics to interrogate hundreds of billions of data points, compressing the journey from genetic association to validated therapeutic hypothesis into a fraction of the time required by conventional approaches.
Variant Bio (搜索) studies people with unusual health traits, looking for genetic differences that could point to new treatments. The company identifies communities with unique genetic architectures and outlier phenotypes to generate human genetic evidence that forms the basis for its discovery programs.
