Venture Capital Surge Propels Catalonia's Life Sciences Sector to Record Investment Heights

Catalonia's life sciences sector has cemented its position as a cornerstone of the region's economic transformation, with venture capital investment reaching unprecedented levels. According to the BioRegion Report prepared by Biocat (search)Search term, health companies in the region attracted a record €517 million in investment last year, with venture capital accounting for €327 million of the total—a clear signal that specialized investors see substantial future potential and returns in the Catalan biotechnology ecosystem.

The surge in funding has been accompanied by a dramatic escalation in the scale of individual financing rounds. Ona Therapeutics (search)Search term, a biotechnology company focused on developing treatments against cancer (search)Search disease and metastasis, raised €30 million in a Series A round in 2020—at the time, the largest Series A in Spain, according to Cristina Horcajada, head of innovation at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute. By May of last year, the same company closed a Series B round of €74 million. Even that figure has been eclipsed: SpliceBio (search)Search term, a genetic medicines startup, shattered records with a €119 million funding round, the largest ever seen in the sector.

The Role of Specialized Capital

Multiple sector voices agree that venture capital ignited the first spark. Maria Terrades, director of the Barcelona Science Park, noted that the arrival of investment funds specialized in biotechnology and health has "played a very important role" in the sector's escalation. Life sciences is a domain in which "not just anyone can invest," Terrades observed. "It's very risky, and requires great technical knowledge."

Joël Jean-Mairet, managing partner at Ysios, emphasized the importance of specialized venture capital in transforming both basic and applied research into products that can reach patients. International Attraction and Remaining Gaps

Barcelona-based funds are increasingly attracting international co-investors. Sachot attributes this cross-border appeal to the quality of local entrepreneurs: "Capital does not arrive by chance, it arrives when the most demanding investors in the world decide to invest here. Despite the momentum, the ecosystem has not yet reached the maturity level of neighboring countries. Large Spanish venture capital funds operate in the range of €100 to €200 million, while Europe's record is held by French fund Jeito Capital (search)Search term, which closed a €1 billion fund in April dedicated to therapeutic innovations and manages approximately €1.6 billion in assets. It would be very helpful to have one." He maintains, however, that Barcelona is at "the beginning of the wheel" of investor success. "In Boston, Series B of €120 million are seen every week. It's part of the cycle: there need to be more investment opportunities, and projects that need more capital."

The Path Forward

For the ecosystem to advance to the next level, industry leaders point to the need for successful exits and licensing agreements that return capital to investors. "We need there to be good exits, or good licensing agreements," said one sector voice, noting that such liquidity events activate more intense investment cycles as venture capital sees returns and gains capacity to deploy more capital.

The outlook for the current year remains strong. According to industry sources consulted, 2026 "looks very good" to break last year's investment record again. Laurent Arens, investment director at BStartup, argued that the Barcelona business fabric is "far from hitting a ceiling," adding: "We will see high-level rounds more regularly, and we are already doing some things better than the rest of Europe."

The broader economic context supports this optimism. Catalonia's GDP per capita grew by 1.6%, above the euro area average, and productivity per hour worked increased by 1.1% in 2025 compared to 1% in the euro area—a trend that has been building since 2023. European Next Generation funds have also played a catalytic role, with Catalonia receiving €10.18 billion, the largest allocation in Spain, generating a multiplier effect of €1.50 for every euro invested.
