A team at the WVU Cancer Institute (search), led by Dr. Shyam Thakkar, has become the first in the world to commercially implement the FDA-approved 180° C2 Cryoballoon (search) for treating Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition that elevates the risk of esophageal cancer (search). This innovative device, developed by Pentax Medical, offers a novel approach to cancer prevention.
The 180° C2 Cryoballoon (search) facilitates highly targeted cryotherapy, a minimally invasive procedure that precisely freezes and eradicates abnormal cells within the esophagus. This advanced method enhances both safety and precision, marking a significant advancement in the fight against esophageal cancer (search).

Barrett's Esophagus and the Cryoballoon
Barrett's esophagus is often preceded by years of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). According to the National Institutes of Health, it is found in 5-12% of patients with chronic GERD symptoms. The Pentax Medical Cryoballoon (search) technology marks a significant step forward in endoscopic treatments, enabling physicians to manage complex gastrointestinal conditions more effectively.
Clinical Implementation and Patient Outcomes
The first patient to undergo the procedure, Rickey Harbert, 71, underwent the procedure on October 15th. He was discharged within an hour and experienced a swift recovery. According to Dr. Thakkar, Harbert resumed his normal activities the day following the procedure.
