A six-year-old girl from Feltwell, Norfolk, who has survived acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (search) (ALL), is now dreaming of a career in medicine after being inspired by the clinicians who treated her. Bellamy-Rose received the all-clear in November 2024 following a diagnosis in 2023, marking the end of a grueling two-year treatment journey.
Over the course of her illness, Bellamy-Rose underwent seven intense chemotherapy treatments. The aggressive regimen led to hair loss and required her to be fed through a tube. Despite these challenges, she is now thriving, according to her family.
A Day in the Life of a Doctor
Bellamy-Rose recently had the opportunity to experience life as a physician for a day at West Suffolk Hospital (search). During her visit, she was given her own staff badge and scrubs, prepped patients for surgery, and toured operating theatres and blood laboratories. She also treated patients — including one she described as having "fidgety legs" — handed out pretend prescriptions, took phone calls, and explored various pieces of medical equipment.
"I liked the blood test parts more than the other parts because they give me a teddy, and I've also had two billion blood tests," Bellamy-Rose told the BBC.
Finding Inspiration in Care
Reflecting on her experience, Bellamy-Rose articulated a clear ambition: "I want to be a doctor because they were nice and kind and very polite and made me feel better. Yes, [they are my heroes], so, I want to work with them."
Her mother, Paige, 27, who previously lived in Beck Row and Mildenhall in Suffolk, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "It was amazing and she was allowed to have fun and just be a child," Paige said. "She has missed out on so many opportunities going through her cancer treatment, and no child should have to live in isolation for so long, so she had the best time."
The experience at West Suffolk Hospital (search) not only provided Bellamy-Rose with a memorable day but also reinforced a career aspiration born from her own journey through cancer treatment — a testament to the lasting impact compassionate care can have on young patients.
