Reflections on Neonatal Erythropoietin Neuroprotection Studies

A study in JAMA Network Open followed 214 preterm infants treated with erythropoietin or placebo to age 10.4, finding no cognitive benefits. Term-born children showed better cognitive outcomes. The study underscores the need for well-designed phase III trials and preclinical testing in multiple animal models before human trials.

Pandemic Isolation May Have Caused Rapid Brain Aging in Teen Girls

New research suggests pandemic isolation caused rapid brain aging in teen girls, with scans showing their brains aged 4.2 years faster than expected, compared to 1.4 years for boys. This accelerated cortical thinning, linked to depression and anxiety, may be due to girls' greater reliance on social interaction. The study raises questions about the long-term impact of such changes.

RDCA–DAP nets new data to speed research, therapies for CF

The RDCA-DAP, funded by the FDA and run by C-Path, has received new CF datasets from the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Network, coordinated by Seattle Children’s Research Institute. These datasets aim to accelerate CF research and therapy development, enhancing the RDCA-DAP’s role in combating rare diseases.

Cognitive behavioral therapy enhances brain circuits to relieve depression

Therapy-treated group showed decreased brain activity correlating with enhanced problem-solving; researchers attribute this to more efficient cognitive processing. Both groups improved in depression severity, but therapy-treated group specifically benefited in cognitive control-related symptoms. Early brain scan changes indicated long-term improvement in problem-solving and depression symptoms, suggesting potential for precision psychiatry.

De novo design of highly selective miniprotein inhibitors of integrins

The article details a study on designing protein minibinders targeting αvβ6 integrin, using computational techniques, yeast display, and biophysical characterization. It includes the synthesis of PLN-74809, biotinylation of proteins, and structural analysis. The study also covers in vitro and in vivo binding assays, inhibition of TGF-β activation, and pharmacokinetic analysis in mice. Techniques like negative-stain EM, cryoEM, and lung mechanics assessment were used. The research aims to develop therapeutic strategies for diseases involving αvβ6 integrin.
