For the first time, a drug developed at UWM enters FDA clinical trials

A compound developed at the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery (MIDD) is set to enter clinical trials at the FDA, potentially leading to a new treatment for depression and Alzheimer's. The drug, GL-Damonia, shows promise in restoring brain cell growth in mice, with no toxicity observed. If successful, it could also treat schizophrenia. The trials involve testing safety in healthy individuals (Phase 1), efficacy in patients (Phase 2), and large-scale effectiveness (Phase 3). Wireless implants new frontier in the management of deadly brain tumours

Glioblastoma, the most aggressive brain cancer, has a 14-month survival rate and a 90% recurrence rate. Traditional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are ineffective. Tumour Treating Fields (TTFs) show promise but are unwieldy. Glioblastoma-on-a-chip platforms mimic GBM cells for personalized medicine. Wireless brain implants using heated nanoparticles offer a non-invasive, at-home treatment alternative, targeting cancer cells without open-skull surgeries or harsh side effects.
