Procept secures FDA approval to study surgical robot in prostate cancer

Procept Biorobotics received FDA approval to start a pivotal trial of its robotic-assisted aquablation therapy in prostate cancer, aiming to compare it to radical prostatectomy. The trial targets men with localized prostate cancer likely to grow at a slow to moderate rate, potentially unlocking a $500 million market. Procept's therapy, already used for noncancerous prostate enlargement, seeks to personalize treatment by removing specific prostate areas while preserving erectile, ejaculatory, and continence functions. The trial will enroll up to 280 men, evaluating morbidity after six months and tracking patients for 10 years to assess treatment-related harm and oncologic events. The study aims to determine if aquablation can treat prostate cancer without the adverse effects of radical prostatectomy.
