- Tulane University is spearheading a $500 million initiative to convert the long-vacant Charity Hospital in New Orleans into a pioneering medical research facility. - The 1930s-era art deco building, shuttered after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, will become a downtown hub of biomedical innovation with construction starting this fall. - The completed hub, scheduled for 2029, will house labs for hundreds of researchers, space for biomedical startups, and classrooms for medical and public health programs. - Tulane leaders describe the project as the largest, most significant initiative in the university's history, aiming to spur medical advancements benefiting the entire Gulf South.
