This mixed methods study aims to understand how factors such as ethnicity, deprivation, language, and access to healthcare affect outcomes for children admitted to paediatric intensive care (PICU).
The main questions it aims to answer are:
- Why are some children more likely to be admitted to paediatric intensive care, or to have worse outcomes once they are there, depending on their ethnicity or background?
- At what points in a child's healthcare journey could earlier support or intervention make a difference?
The first part of the study will involve interviewing parents and carers of children admitted to intensive care and health care professionals working in or referring children to intensive care. The second part of the study will be an analysis of existing NHS data.
Participants will have an interview with a researcher lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

Qualitative study:
Aims To explore, using individual interviews, the experiences and perspectives of a purposively sampled diverse cohort of parents of children admitted to PICU and Health Care Professionals (HCPs) working in or referring patients to PICUs
Objectives
• To understand the experience of patient families and health professionals of PICU admission, including barriers (for example language, financial, access to specialist care, systemic healthcare biases) that can be faced leading up to admission, experience on the unit, examples of good practice and perception of factors that influence outcomes
This work package will comprise a qualitative study in which semi-structured interviews will be conducted with families of children who have been admitted to PICU and HCPs who work in PICU or refer children to PICU.

入选标准
- •Parents/Carers
- •Inclusion Criteria:
- •Parent or carer of a child admitted to paediatric intensive care at one of the participating sites: Great Ormond Street Hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, or Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.
- •Aged 18 years or over.
- •Able to provide informed consent.
- •Approached no earlier than 48 hours after the child's admission to PICU.
- •Where the child has died, parents/carers will be approached between 6 and 12 weeks following the death.
- •Parents/carers who do not speak English may be included, with interviews conducted using a professional interpreter where required.

- •Individuals unable to provide informed consent.
- •Families of children with ongoing safeguarding concerns at the time of potential recruitment.
- •Families who are actively involved in a formal complaint process against the hospital at the time of recruitment.
- •Parents/carers approached within 48 hours of PICU admission.
- •Bereaved parents/carers approached outside the 6-12 week bereavement window.
- •Healthcare professionals
- •Inclusion Criteria:
- •Healthcare professionals aged 18 years or over who either:
- •work in a paediatric intensive care unit, or
- •are involved in referring children to paediatric intensive care, at one of the four participating sites.
- •Able to provide informed consent.
- •Exclusion Criteria:

This is a qualitative sub-study; there is no quantitative primary outcome measure. The measurement tool is a semi-structured interview topic guide administered to parents/carers and healthcare professionals. Data will be analysed using Framework Analysis

时间窗: Retrospective data analysis (data collected 2003-2025)
Risk of mortality in children admitted to paediatric intensive care, derived from linked PICANet, HES APC and ONS mortality data, stratified by social determinants of health to assess inequalities in mortality outcomes.
