Since two-thirds of the blood in our body sits in the veins, changes in the tone of these vessels (whether they dilate or constrict) can greatly impact how much blood (and therefore oxygen gets delivered around our body. In young healthy individuals, we found the veins in the leg constrict in low oxygen conditions. This essentially allow more blood to be pumped around the body, thereby compensate for the reduced oxygen levels. In conditions of high oxygen, we found the veins become more compliant. Excitingly, this study was the first to examine the effects of high oxygen on venous function. We do not know if these changes in vein function with high and low oxygen are due to the direct effect of oxygen on the veins themselves or via some upstream pathways which altered the nervous input to the vessels. But since these changes are opposite to what others have seen in the arteries, we speculate the changes we observed within the veins may be due changes in the nervous innervation (i.e., the fight or flight response).

- •Patients with essential hypertension (At least Stage 2 hypertension; untreated office SBP greater or equal to 140 mmHg or DBP greater or equal to 90 mmHg);
- •-Men and women;
- •-Aged over 18 years;
- •-Body mass index <35 kg/m2
排除标准
- •-Significant arrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrillation, previous VT / significant ventricular ectopy)
- •-Hemodynamically significant valvular heart disease (e.g., stenosis, mechanical valve replacement)
- •-Severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction
- •-Recent acute coronary syndrome (<12 months) (e.g., MI, angioplasty, unstable angina)
- •-Previous coronary artery bypass surgery
- •-Secondary causes of hypertension (e.g., phaeochromocytoma)
- •-Recent stroke/TIA (<12 months)
- •-Current smoker
- •-Body mass index <18 kg/m2.
- •-Current pregnancy
- •-Current user of recreational drugs
- •-Current abuser of alcohol
- •-Inability to fully or appropriately provide consent (e.g., language issue, reading capability)
- •-Underlying medical conditions, which in the opinion of the Investigator place the participant at unacceptably high risk for participating in the study.
