简要总结

Recurrent Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (R-URTI) are a common childhood condition that significantly impacts children’s health and development. R-URTI causes reduced academic performance, loss of productivity, and behavioral issues, such as lack of concentration and short attention spans. In India, the prevalence of respiratory tract infections in children is around 11.3%. R-URTI is characterized by children having at least four URTI episodes, each lasting four or more days, within a six-month period, with intervals of well-being. Common diagnoses include Rhinitis, Rhinosinusitis, Pharyngotonsillitis, Acute Otitis Media, and Laryngitis.

Several factors contribute to the development of R-URTIs, including gut microbiota imbalances (dysbiosis), immune system immaturity, environmental factors (pollution, second-hand smoke), atopy, allergies, poor diet, and socio-economic factors. The gut microbiome plays a key role in immune system regulation, metabolism, and digestion. Dysbiosis, or disruption of the gut microbiota, is increasingly recognized as a factor in the development of allergies in children. It affects immune function by reducing regulatory T-cells (Tregs) and anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10, leading to immune system dysfunction and allergic diseases.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, many diseases are linked to disturbances in Agni, the digestive fire that governs metabolism and immune function. In Ayurveda, the balance of Agni is crucial for maintaining health, while its disruption can lead to disease. The immune system’s strength, or Vyadhikshamatva, is influenced by factors like Bala (vital energy), Ojas (life essence), and Prakriti (natural constitution). Recurrent URTIs in children may arise from compromised immunity, often related to deranged Agni. Analyzing the relationship between Agni and modern immune parameters, such as serum IgE levels, could provide valuable insights into personalized approaches for managing R-URTI by addressing underlying immune imbalances and improving overall health.

This study aims to explore this intersection, examining both Ayurvedic and modern medical frameworks to better understand the underlying mechanisms of R-URTI and its management.
