简要总结

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate whether the PEACE program can improve early career registered nurses' registered nurses' attitudes towards caring for palliative patients, ability to cope with patients' death, and self-efficacy in initiating advanced care planning conversations

This study aims to address the following research questions:

  • Does the PEACE program improve early career registered nurses' attitudes towards caring for palliative patients, ability to cope with patients' death and self-efficacy in initiating advanced care planning conversations?
  • What are the participants' experiences of participating in the PEACE program?

Researchers will compare participants who receive the PEACE program (death conversation and online ACP education) with participants who receive only the online ACP education to see if informal death conversations improve early career registered nurses' attitudes towards caring for palliative patients, ability to cope with patients' death and self-efficacy in initiating advanced care planning conversations.

Participants will:

  • Complete online questionnaires measuring attitudes towards caring for palliative patients, ability to cope with patients' death and self-efficacy in initiating advanced care planning conversations.
  • Participate in a facilitator-led group discussion session about experiences of patients' deaths, coping with patients' death and dying, communications with patients and/or family members about death and dying, and discussing advance care planning with patients and/or family members (intervention group only).
  • Complete an asynchronous online ACP education session consisting of short recorded videos and an online discussion forum (both intervention and control group).
  • Complete follow-up surveys, including a 3-month follow-up assessing whether participants have engage with any patients and/or their family members in advance care planning conversations.

结局指标

主要结局

Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale

时间窗: Baseline

A 30-item 5 point Likert scale. Positive items are scored one (strongly disagree) to five (strongly agree). Scores are reversed for negative items. Possible scores can range from 30-150. A higher score indicates a more positive attitude toward caring for this patient population.

Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale

时间窗: Post-test (Immediately at end of 2-weeks intervention)

A 30-item 5 point Likert scale. Positive items are scored one (strongly disagree) to five (strongly agree). Scores are reversed for negative items. Possible scores can range from 30-150. A higher score indicates a more positive attitude toward caring for this patient population.

Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale

时间窗: 3 months follow-up

A 30-item 5 point Likert scale. Positive items are scored one (strongly disagree) to five (strongly agree). Scores are reversed for negative items. Possible scores can range from 30-150. A higher score indicates a more positive attitude toward caring for this patient population.
