Insulin is a hormone synthesized in the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. It regulates blood glucose levels by promoting the entry of glucose into cells, thereby decreasing its concentration in the blood.
Insulin is indicated for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. In Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), insulin is essential for survival as the body cannot produce insulin due to autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. In Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), insulin is used when oral medications and lifestyle modifications are insufficient to achieve glycemic control, particularly as beta-cell function declines over time.
