Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It acts by binding to GABA receptors (GABA-A and GABA-B), leading to hyperpolarization of neurons and reduced neuronal excitability. GABA helps dampen nerve activity, and reduced GABA signaling has been implicated in conditions involving overactive nerve circuits, such as muscle spasticity following spinal cord injury.
