At least 14 people were hospitalized Friday night during a concert in San Jose, California, where popular electronic duo The Chainsmokers were performing at Discovery Meadow. The San Jose Fire Department (SJFD) responded to over a dozen calls for assistance during the EDM duo's show, according to statements posted on social media.
"At 8:22 p.m. on Friday, September 4, the San José Fire Department responded to an outdoor concert at Discovery Meadow for reports of multiple patients requiring medical attention," SJFD wrote.
Emergency Response
The San Jose Fire Department first responded to multiple calls of more than a dozen patients requiring medical attention around 8:23 p.m. SJFD immediately requested an Ambulance Task Force, two additional advanced life support fire units, and a Battalion Chief to manage the incident and provide additional medical resources. A total of 14 ambulances responded, and 14 patients were transported to local hospitals.
The concert began at 5 p.m., and by 10:34 p.m., SJFD said the incident had wrapped up.
Nature of the Medical Emergencies
While SJFD did not announce the specific nature of the need for medical attention, local police told NBC Bay Area that several people were being treated for "suspected alcohol intoxication and drug-related issues." Authorities said several people were recovering from alcohol or drug problems that took place at Discovery Meadow.
Police said paramedics treated some people at the park, but at least 10 were taken to the hospital. SJFD said in a Saturday morning post on X that fourteen people were taken to a local hospital.
Patient Status and Response
The condition of those requiring hospitalization was not revealed. The Chainsmokers — whose concert was not deterred by the medical emergencies — have not yet commented on the situation, but they did share video from the gig on social media.
