核心洞察
AbbVie (搜索) announced a definitive agreement to acquire a device manufacturing facility in Tempe, Arizona from West Pharmaceutical Services for over $175 million, expanding drug delivery device capabilities for immunology and neuroscience medicines (搜索).
The company will invest an additional $380 million to build two new active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing facilities at its North Chicago campus, integrating advanced AI technologies to support next-generation neuroscience and obesity medications (搜索).
These investments represent significant progress toward AbbVie (搜索)'s $100 billion commitment to U.S. research and development and capital investments over the next decade, with plans to hire approximately 500 new employees across both sites.
AbbVie (搜索) has announced two major manufacturing investments totaling $555 million to significantly expand its U.S. production capabilities, marking substantial progress toward the company's $100 billion commitment to domestic research and development and capital investments over the next decade.
Arizona Device Manufacturing Acquisition
The pharmaceutical giant entered into a definitive agreement with West Pharmaceutical Services to acquire a device manufacturing facility in Tempe, Arizona, along with associated intellectual property. AbbVie (搜索) plans to invest more than $175 million to acquire, modernize, and fully integrate the site into its global manufacturing network.
The Arizona facility will significantly expand AbbVie (搜索)'s drug delivery device manufacturing capabilities and capacity, supporting production of current and next-generation immunology and neuroscience medicines (搜索). The transaction includes the transfer of manufacturing facilities with multiple production lines and 3.5 mL on-body injector technology.
"Over the next decade, AbbVie (搜索) is investing more than $10 billion in capital to broadly support innovation and expand our manufacturing capabilities and capacity in the U.S.," said Robert A. Michael, chairman and chief executive officer of AbbVie. "With this investment, AbbVie is strengthening our manufacturing capabilities, ensuring we are well-positioned to develop and deliver next-generation medicines that make a remarkable impact on patients' lives."
AbbVie (搜索) plans to hire approximately 200 employees at the Arizona site. The transaction is anticipated to close in mid-2026, subject to closing conditions.
Illinois API Manufacturing Expansion
In a separate announcement, AbbVie (搜索) revealed plans for a $380 million investment to build two new active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing facilities at its North Chicago, Illinois campus. These state-of-the-art facilities will integrate advanced manufacturing technologies with artificial intelligence to support production of next-generation neuroscience and obesity medications (搜索).
Construction will begin in spring 2026, with both facilities expected to be fully operational in 2029. The company plans to hire 300 people in North Chicago to support these new facilities, including engineers, scientists, manufacturing operators, and lab technicians.
"This milestone demonstrates further progress against our $100 billion commitment to U.S. R&D and capital investments over the next decade," Michael stated. "By strengthening our U.S. manufacturing capabilities, we are well-positioned to support our investment in innovation and enhance our ability to deliver next-generation medicines to patients."
Strategic Manufacturing Initiative
The Illinois investment represents the second phase of AbbVie (搜索)'s API manufacturing expansion. In September 2025, the company broke ground on the first phase with a new chemical synthesis facility designed to return API production for select neuroscience, immunology, and oncology products (搜索) from Europe and Asia to the United States.
Active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing involves producing the active components responsible for a medication's therapeutic effects through a complex, multi-step process. The new facilities will enable AbbVie (搜索) to enhance its domestic production capabilities for critical therapeutic areas.
Broader U.S. Manufacturing Strategy
These announcements are part of AbbVie (搜索)'s comprehensive strategy to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint. The company currently employs approximately 29,000 people across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, including more than 6,000 at its 11 U.S. manufacturing sites. In Illinois alone, AbbVie employs more than 11,500 people.
Beyond the Arizona and Illinois investments, AbbVie (搜索) has announced plans for significant investments at its Massachusetts manufacturing facility and is currently in discussions with multiple U.S. states about potential manufacturing investments. The company anticipates announcing additional investments in 2026.
When completed, the Arizona acquisition will significantly expand AbbVie (搜索)'s presence and economic impact in the state, while the Illinois expansion reinforces the company's long-term commitment to its headquarters state. Combined, these investments will create approximately 500 new jobs and strengthen AbbVie's ability to manufacture critical medicines domestically across its key therapeutic areas of immunology, neuroscience, and oncology.
