Actor Tyler Mane Reveals Male Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Urges Men to Seek Early Screening

Actor and former professional wrestler Tyler Mane, 59, has publicly revealed that he is undergoing treatment for male breast cancer (搜索), a rare condition he said is "super rare" and accounts for only about 1% of breast cancers. Mane, best known for playing Sabretooth in the 2000 film "X-Men" and Michael Myers in the "Halloween" franchise, shared his diagnosis on Facebook and through a new podcast, "Mane AF," in an effort to raise awareness of a disease he said is rarely talked about among men.
Mane was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (搜索) (IDC), the most common form of breast cancer (搜索) in men, in which cancer cells begin in the ducts and can grow into other parts of the breast tissue and metastasize to other parts of the body. A 28-millimeter tumor was removed surgically. "I was a Stage 1, so we got it early," Mane said. "Now we're into the chemotherapy (搜索) ... to make sure that it's completely out of my system ... and then after the chemotherapy, I have some radiation to make sure we hit that area specifically."
The Role of Early Detection and Advocacy
Mane credits his wife, Renae, with potentially saving his life by insisting he have a lump in his breast area examined. He initially assumed the lump was a lipoma, a soft, fatty growth he had previously had removed, but noted this lump felt different. "To be honest, even my doctor said, 'Oh, it's probably nothing. It's probably just a lipoma,'" Mane recalled. "And then, when I went in for the [surgery], he said, 'You probably want to get that removed, but it's probably nothing.' It's just dismissed so much that you have to be an advocate for your own body."
Mane emphasized that men are often diagnosed at more advanced stages precisely because the condition is not discussed or looked for. "I found out that men are more likely to be diagnosed in advance[d] stages BECAUSE it's not talked about and not looked for," he wrote. "In fact, my doctors all dismissed it and it was only because my wife pushed me to get the lump removed that I got in early."
Disease Burden and Risk Factors

Symptoms and Forms of the Disease
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (搜索) (CDC), symptoms of possible breast cancer (搜索) in men include a lump or swelling in the breast, redness or flaky skin in the breast, irritation or dimpling of breast skin, nipple discharge, and pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area. The most common symptom is a firm, usually painless lump under or near the nipple. Mane said the lump was the only symptom he experienced before his diagnosis.
The CDC describes two main forms of the disease in men: invasive ductal carcinoma (搜索), where cancer cells begin in the ducts and can grow into other parts of the breast tissue and metastasize, and ductal carcinoma in situ (搜索), in which cancer cells remain only in the lining of the ducts and have not spread to other tissues in the breast.
Treatment Landscape
As in women, treatment for male breast cancer (搜索) may include surgery, chemotherapy (搜索), radiation therapy (搜索), hormone therapy, and targeted therapy, according to the CDC. Treatment usually starts with surgery, while other common treatments include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy, according to the Mayo Clinic. Treatment depends on factors including the cancer's stage and the patient's overall health.
Screening mammograms are not usually recommended for men, even those at increased risk, according to the National Cancer Institute. Mane described the physical toll of chemotherapy (搜索), noting that "chemotherapy is hard on your system" and that it involves a repetitive cycle of treatment followed by recovery. "You feel like c--- for about the first week, and then you have a couple of weeks where you're like, 'I'm just getting back to normal now,'" he said. "And then you have to go in, sit in that chair again and have that pumped into your body again to kill off the cancer cells."
A Call for Awareness
Mane said he initially wanted to keep his diagnosis private out of embarrassment. "For sure, I wanted to keep my diagnosis private at the beginning because I felt a bit ashamed," he admitted. "I was like, 'How can I have breast cancer (搜索)?' But then I quickly turned to, 'No, I got to talk about this because this is a very serious issue that men don't usually deal with.'"
He urged other men to be proactive about their health. "This is a cancer that anyone can get," Mane said. "If you feel something different in your chest than the norm, you have to go get it checked out and tested. You have to insist on getting tested and checked. You have to be the best advocate for yourself." He added a pointed message to men: "All you guys out there, listen to your wives when they tell you to get checked."
