Again Acquires Genomatica to Build AI-Driven Biomanufacturing Platform Spanning Discovery to Industrial Scale
核心洞察
Copenhagen-based Again (搜索) has acquired US industrial biotech pioneer Genomatica (搜索), integrating Geno's AI-driven computational platform with Again's bioprocess scale-up engineering capabilities.
The deal brings together Geno's portfolio of over 1,100 patents and two decades of proprietary data with Again (搜索)'s multi-feedstock production technologies to shorten development cycles.
The combined company will operate across the full arc from pathway discovery to commercial-scale manufacturing, offering licensing, co-development, and direct product sales models.
Copenhagen-based biomanufacturing company Again (搜索) has acquired San Diego-based industrial biotechnology pioneer Genomatica (搜索) (Geno), merging AI-driven molecule discovery with industrial-scale bioprocess engineering in a deal whose financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction unites Geno's two decades of computational biotechnology expertise and patent estate with Again's platform for developing and scaling biological production processes across multiple feedstocks.
Max Kufner, CEO of Again (搜索), framed the acquisition as a convergence of computational power and real-world execution. "AI is revolutionizing biology, but algorithms are only as good as their ability to translate into real-world, commercial-scale execution," Kufner said. "Geno pioneered AI and computational biotechnology for molecule discovery and design. By integrating that with our scale-up platform and novel feedstock technologies, we are building the world's leading biomanufacturing platform, unlocking novel products and supply-chains that industries critically need."
Platform Integration and Data Assets
At the core of the transaction is Geno's AI and computational biotechnology platform, which includes a portfolio of more than 1,100 patents and proprietary data spanning experimental research, structural analysis, scale-up processes, and development outcomes accumulated over more than two decades. Again (搜索) plans to feed this data directly into its computational engines to sharpen model accuracy and compress the timeline from concept to market for new production pathways and products.
Geno, founded in 1998, has focused on developing biological processes for producing chemicals and materials from renewable feedstocks, working with manufacturers and consumer goods companies on commercial-scale applications. Its capabilities in in-silico pathway and strain design, along with predictive machine-learning analytics, complement Again (搜索)'s strengths in computational modeling, engineering, and industrial execution.
Full-Arc Commercial Strategy
The combined company now operates across the entire production lifecycle—from biological pathway discovery through process development to industrial-scale manufacturing. Commercially, Again (搜索) will pursue a diversified model with three value-creation approaches: licensing technology, co-developing production pathways with industrial partners where they are mission-critical, and selling products from existing and planned production assets.
Again (搜索), which operates across industrial, personal and home care, food and feed markets, maintains operations in Copenhagen, Munich, and Houston. Existing Geno partners will continue to be supported during the transition period.
Policy Tailwinds
The acquisition arrives amid growing government interest in strengthening domestic biomanufacturing infrastructure. In the United States, the BIOSECURE Act and a federal commitment of up to $15 billion for domestic bio-infrastructure reflect a broader push to increase investment in biotechnology and reduce dependence on overseas production. European governments have similarly sought to expand domestic biomanufacturing capacity and bolster supply-chain resilience.
By combining Geno's computational discovery capabilities with Again (搜索)'s feedstock-independent technologies and scale-up expertise, the merged entity aims to address what Kufner described as industries' critical need for novel products and supply chains, positioning itself at the intersection of AI-driven biotechnology and industrial manufacturing.
