AGC Biologics Partners with Repair Biotechnologies to Develop Novel mRNA Therapy for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
核心洞察
AGC Biologics has partnered with Repair Biotechnologies (搜索) to develop and manufacture a novel mRNA therapy (搜索) targeting atherosclerotic plaques, which cause 27% of all human mortality.
The collaboration leverages AGC Biologics' comprehensive mRNA manufacturing capabilities to provide a streamlined path from preclinical development to clinical trials.
Repair Biotechnologies (搜索) is developing a first-in-class therapy that breaks down toxic free cholesterol (搜索) inside cells to rapidly reduce arterial plaque and reverse cardiovascular conditions.
AGC Biologics announced a strategic partnership with Repair Biotechnologies (搜索) to develop and manufacture a novel mRNA therapeutic targeting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (搜索), one of the world's leading causes of mortality. The collaboration aims to create a therapy that rapidly stabilizes and reduces atherosclerotic plaques in major blood vessels, addressing a condition responsible for 27% of all human deaths through heart attacks and strokes caused by plaque rupture.
Addressing Critical Manufacturing Challenges
The partnership addresses a fundamental challenge in mRNA therapeutic development: complex manufacturing requirements. Repair Biotechnologies (搜索) selected AGC Biologics for their comprehensive production capabilities that span the entire manufacturing chain from plasmid DNA blueprint to final drug product encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles.
"Developing a novel mRNA therapeutic as a part of the vital goal of curing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (搜索) is a complex task, and robust manufacturing is critical to our progress," said Reason, CEO and co-founder of Repair Biotechnologies (搜索). "We chose AGC Biologics because they have mastered the entire production chain for therapeutics of this class, eliminating critical risks and delays to provide a fast and reliable path to the GMP drug product needed for our clinical trials."
Novel Therapeutic Mechanism
Repair Biotechnologies (搜索) is developing a first-in-class therapy that targets what the company describes as an "undruggable target" - toxic excess free cholesterol inside cells. This innovative approach aims to break down cholesterol accumulation that contributes to arterial plaque formation, potentially reversing previously irreversible cardiovascular conditions. The therapy is designed to address not only atherosclerosis (搜索) but also familial hypercholesterolemia (搜索) and liver fibrosis (搜索) in metabolic disorders.
The therapeutic mechanism represents a significant departure from traditional cardiovascular treatments by directly targeting cellular cholesterol metabolism rather than systemic cholesterol levels. According to the company, this approach has the potential to treat numerous conditions associated with aging and obesity by removing what they identify as a key contributor to cardiovascular mortality.
Manufacturing Infrastructure and Capabilities
AGC Biologics will provide end-to-end manufacturing services through their Heidelberg, Germany facility, which previously supplied plasmid DNA starting material for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in 2021. The facility utilizes state-of-the-art single-use equipment designed to create flexibility, reduce timelines, and accelerate project turnover.
"For clients like Repair Biotechnologies (搜索), we can be the most cost-effective, reliable, cGMP provider that can take life-saving mRNA treatments through the journey from preclinical to commercial stages," said Alberto Santagostino, CEO of AGC Biologics. The company's GMP practices comply with both European Medicines Agency and U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards.
Expanding mRNA Applications
This collaboration represents a significant evolution in mRNA technology applications, moving beyond the infectious disease focus that dominated during the COVID-19 pandemic into chronic, age-related conditions. The partnership builds on advances in mRNA delivery systems and manufacturing processes developed during the pandemic response.
The Heidelberg facility's plasmid DNA and messenger RNA production capabilities provide the infrastructure necessary to support the complex manufacturing requirements of this novel therapeutic approach. AGC Biologics' global network spans facilities across the United States, Europe, and Asia, providing comprehensive support for international clinical development programs.
