AI-Powered Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Achieves 99% Accuracy and Expands to Pharmacy Networks
核心洞察
A new AI-powered retina (搜索) tracker called SMART (搜索) achieved greater than 99% accuracy in screening for diabetic retinopathy (搜索) at The Endocrine Society meeting.
The system can analyze retinal images in less than one second using smartphones and other internet-powered devices.
AEYE Health (搜索)'s autonomous AI screening system AEYE-DS (搜索) is being distributed to U.S. pharmacies through a partnership with Ford Medical (搜索).
Artificial intelligence systems for diabetic retinopathy (搜索) screening are achieving breakthrough accuracy rates and expanding access through pharmacy networks, offering new hope for preventing vision loss in millions of patients worldwide.
SMART AI System Demonstrates Near-Perfect Accuracy
Researchers from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center (搜索) in Houston reported that their Simple Mobile AI Retina (搜索) Tracker (SMART (搜索)) program achieved greater than 99% accuracy in screening for diabetic retinopathy (搜索). The findings were presented at the annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in San Francisco.
The SMART (搜索) system "uses cutting-edge deep learning algorithms to analyze retinal fundus images quickly and accurately, on internet-powered devices including basic smartphones," said researcher Jansi Rani Sethuraj in a news release. The AI can process images in less than one second and successfully distinguish diabetic retinopathy (搜索) from other eye diseases.
To develop the program, researchers trained the artificial intelligence model on several thousand retinal images from a diverse patient population spanning six continents. The system was then validated on a separate set of images, demonstrating its robust performance across different populations.
Expanding Access Through Pharmacy Networks
In a parallel development, AEYE Health (搜索) announced a strategic partnership with Ford Medical (搜索) to distribute their autonomous AI screening system, AEYE-DS (搜索), to pharmacies and non-acute centers across the United States. This fully autonomous system works with compatible retinal cameras to provide point-of-care diabetic retinopathy (搜索) screening.
"This solution is fully autonomous. Unlike all other AI solutions, it doesn't just measure or do decision support but can actually diagnose diabetic retinopathy (搜索) for patients," explained Zack Dvey-Aharon, PhD, CEO and co-founder of AEYE Health (搜索). The system determines whether patients have referrable diabetic retinopathy requiring specialist care or can return for routine screening in 12 months.
AEYE-DS (搜索) is indicated for detecting more than mild diabetic retinopathy (搜索) and works with retinal cameras including the Optomed Aurora and Topcon NW400. The AI screening results can be printed and emailed in PDF format for easy integration into clinical workflows.
Addressing a Global Health Challenge
Diabetic retinopathy (搜索) represents a significant global health burden, affecting more than 100 million people worldwide and serving as a leading cause of preventable blindness. The condition occurs when leaky blood vessels damage the retina (搜索), the light-sensing tissue lining the back of the eye.
"The SMART (搜索) AI application enables ophthalmologists to streamline patient screening, empowers primary care providers to incorporate eye exams into routine visits, and expands access to high-quality retinal assessments in regions lacking specialized ophthalmic care," Sethuraj noted.
Clinical Impact and Future Implications
The deployment of these AI systems could transform healthcare delivery by making specialized screening more accessible. "By democratizing eye care through universally accessible mobile technology, this innovation has the potential to screen billions globally, reducing vision loss from diabetic retinopathy (搜索) while transforming healthcare delivery systems," said Dr. Elangovan Krishnan with AIM Doctor (搜索) in Houston.
Scott Greenberg, vice president of sales at Ford Medical (搜索), emphasized the partnership's significance: "This partnership with AEYE Health (搜索) represents a major step forward in making AI-driven diagnostics more accessible. We're giving non-acute providers the ability to deliver real clinical value through early detection — keeping patients healthier and helping providers grow their impact and their business."
The expansion of AI-powered screening into pharmacy settings could significantly increase screening rates by making the technology available in convenient, accessible locations where patients regularly visit for their diabetes management.
