Alvotech, a global biotechnology company specializing in biosimilar medicines, announced a planned leadership transition that will see founder Róbert Wessman step down as CEO at the end of the first quarter of 2026. Lisa Graver, who has served on Alvotech's board since 2022 and previously led Alvogen until its recent acquisition, will assume the chief executive role.
Strategic Leadership Transition
Wessman, who founded Alvotech in 2013 and has served as Chairman since inception, took on the additional CEO responsibilities in 2023 with the explicit goal of strengthening day-to-day leadership. "When I stepped into the CEO role at the beginning of 2023, it was with a clear objective to strengthen day-to-day leadership and position the company for its next phase," Wessman stated. "My intention was not to combine the roles of Chairman and CEO on a long-term basis, and the Board and I have been planning for a CEO succession accordingly for some time."
Following the transition, Wessman will continue as Executive Chairman in a full-time capacity, focusing on strategy, business development, portfolio direction, capital markets, and corporate governance. As the company's largest shareholder, he emphasized his continued commitment to Alvotech's success.
New Leadership Profile
Graver brings extensive pharmaceutical industry experience spanning over 25 years across specialized generics, biosimilars, and branded sectors. She most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Alvogen, overseeing the company through its growth and subsequent acquisition by Lotus Pharmaceutical in December 2025. Her long-standing professional relationship with Wessman, spanning more than two decades, positions her well for the transition.
"Lisa has been a trusted partner to me for more than 20 years and brings deep leadership experience and understanding of this business," Wessman noted. "She has the full support of our Board to build on our strong foundations and lead Alvotech forward."
Company Portfolio and Market Position
Alvotech currently operates with five biosimilars approved and marketed globally, including biosimilars to major branded products such as Humira (adalimumab), Stelara (ustekinumab), Simponi (golimumab), Eylea (aflibercept), and Prolia/Xgeva (denosumab). The company's development pipeline includes 30 products targeting autoimmune disorders (搜索), eye disorders, osteoporosis (搜索), respiratory disease (搜索), and cancer (搜索).
"We have built a world-class R&D and manufacturing platform, and a pipeline that currently includes 30 products in development and ranks among the most valuable in the industry," Wessman stated, expressing optimism about the company's prospects.
Transition Timeline
The leadership transition will begin immediately, with Graver working closely with Wessman and the executive team over the coming months to ensure continuity. Upon assuming the CEO role, she will step down from the Alvotech Board. The company emphasized that the transition represents a strategic move to position leadership alongside core operations in Iceland.
Graver expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, "I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Alvotech at this important stage of the company's development. Alvotech has built a differentiated platform, a clear strategy and a strong culture."
