Alzheimer's Research Leaders Highlight FDA-Approved Therapies, Blood Biomarkers, and Prevention Strategies at Date with a Cure 2026
核心洞察
Two FDA-approved drugs, lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla), have demonstrated the ability to slow Alzheimer's disease (搜索) progression by up to 30% in early-stage patients.
Blood-based biomarkers are now highly accurate and covered by Medicare, enabling detection of Alzheimer's-related molecular changes 15 to 20 years before symptoms appear.
Researchers emphasize that lifestyle interventions including diet, exercise, cognitive activity, and social connections can help build brain resilience against dementia.
The dementia research community gathered at San Diego Oasis at Rancho Bernardo on August 1, 2026, for the annual Date with a Cure forum, where leading Alzheimer's researchers shared the latest breakthroughs in the field. Moderated by CBS 8's Marcella Lee, the panel featured Dr. Paul Aisen of USC's Alzheimer's Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI), Dr. James Brewer of UCSD's Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease (搜索) Research Center, Dr. Hector M. González of UCSD School of Medicine, and Dr. Jerold Chun of Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (搜索). Dr. Paulette Cazares of SHARP was also slated to participate but was unable to attend.
"These are really exciting times in Alzheimer's disease (搜索) research," said Dr. Paul Aisen, founding director of USC ATRI and a professor of neurology with more than three decades in the field. "Many of the panelists here have been working on this for decades and it's only in the last few years that we have seen dramatic success."
FDA-Approved Disease-Modifying Therapies
A central focus of the forum was the two FDA-approved drugs that have demonstrated the ability to slow Alzheimer's disease (搜索) progression: lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla). According to the researchers, these medications can slow the disease down by up to 30% in patients with early-stage Alzheimer's. The panel emphasized that these therapies are specifically indicated for the early stage of the disease and that all medications carry risks, urging patients not to rush into treatment without first consulting their physician.
Blood Biomarkers and Early Detection
The researchers reported significant advances in blood-based biomarkers, which are now described as "highly accurate" and are covered by Medicare. These blood tests can detect the earliest molecular changes indicative of Alzheimer's disease (搜索) approximately 15 to 20 years before symptoms manifest. "It turns out that dementia is brewing in the brain for many years before you are aware of it," the panel noted. Data is currently being compiled from a longitudinal study that began in 2010, and researchers continue to discover newer and more sensitive biomarkers. Despite this progress, the experts cautioned that it will still take about 10 years to achieve full primary prevention.
Building Brain Resilience
The panel outlined several evidence-based strategies to help maintain brain and body health, including adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet, regular exercise, cognitive activities such as learning a new language, maintaining social connections, monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar, and getting adequate sleep. The researchers stressed that starting these habits early is important for building long-term brain resilience.
Women's Brain Health and Menopause Research
Addressing the higher prevalence of dementia in women compared to men, the researchers discussed ongoing studies examining gender differences in Alzheimer's disease (搜索). UCSD is actively investigating the connection between Alzheimer's and menopause, as well as the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and dementia. The panel delivered a clear message: "Taking estrogen does NOT help or prevent dementia. There is NO evidence that estrogen or progesterone treats dementia."
Clinical Trials and Emerging Research Directions
The forum highlighted that clinical trials are currently available for all stages of Alzheimer's disease (搜索), with prevention-focused trials playing an essential role in advancing scientific understanding. The researchers encouraged community members to consider joining the APT Webstudy to help gather more data. A new research direction discussed involves studying the role of mitochondria in cells as it relates to Alzheimer's pathology.
Combating Misinformation
The panel issued strong warnings about the prevalence of misinformation surrounding Alzheimer's treatments. The researchers explicitly stated that there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease (搜索) and related dementias. They debunked several claims circulating in the public domain, clarifying that heavy exposure to carbon dioxide does not remove amyloid (搜索) proteins in the brain, ketogenic diets are not a treatment or preventative measure for dementia, and creatine, fish oil, other supplements, and sauna use are not treatments for Alzheimer's disease. "Unfortunately people knowingly take advantage of vulnerable people worried about this disease," the panel cautioned.
The forum was sponsored by San Diego Oasis and organized by Alzheimer's San Diego (搜索), which provides Dementia Care Coaches to support San Diego County residents and caregivers.
