Anthropic (搜索) has acquired New York-based biotech AI startup Coefficient Bio (搜索) in a stock deal valued at over $400 million, marking a significant expansion of its ambitions in life sciences and drug discovery. The acquisition brings a small team of fewer than 10 researchers—many with backgrounds in computational biology at Genentech—into Anthropic's healthcare and life sciences division.
Relative to Anthropic (搜索)'s roughly $380 billion valuation following its February Series G round, the deal represents about 0.1 percent dilution, signaling the company's commitment to domain-specific AI development in the life sciences sector.
Strategic Shift Toward Biology-Specific AI
The move signals a shift from Anthropic (搜索)'s earlier approach of adapting its general-purpose Claude (搜索) models for scientific use cases through integrations and partnerships. With Coefficient Bio (搜索), the company is bringing in a team focused on building biology-specific AI systems from the ground up, with the startup previously describing its goal as creating "artificial superintelligence for science."
Anthropic (搜索) had already laid groundwork in this space with the launch of Claude (搜索) for Life Sciences last year, but the acquisition suggests a deeper push into domain-specific model development.
High-Caliber Scientific Talent
Coefficient Bio (搜索) was founded less than a year ago by Samuel Stanton and Nathan C Frey, both former members of Genentech's Prescient Design unit, which specializes in computational drug discovery. Stanton, a data science PhD from NYU, worked on experimental design and contributed to projects such as Cortex, a deep learning architecture for drug discovery, and Beignet, an open-source biological research library.
Frey led multidisciplinary teams spanning machine learning, molecular biology and computational research at Genentech and Roche. He also helped shape AI strategy and collaborations, including with Nvidia (搜索). His academic record includes more than 20 publications across leading journals and conferences, and he received an Outstanding Paper Award at ICLR 2024 for work on generative models for drug discovery.
The founding team is part of a broader migration of talent from Genentech into AI-driven biotech ventures, following restructuring at parent company Roche that cut hundreds of roles and shifted focus toward AI-integrated operations.
Comprehensive Biotech Automation Platform
According to reports, Coefficient Bio (搜索) had developed a platform capable of handling a range of biotech tasks, including drafting research and development plans, managing clinical regulatory strategies and identifying new drug candidates. The team will now join Anthropic (搜索)'s healthcare and life sciences group led by Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who outlined a strategy earlier this year to position Claude (搜索) as a leading AI model for biological applications.
In a previous post, Stanton described the company's vision as "ushering biopharma into the Intelligence Age," reflecting ambitions to transform how scientific research and decision-making are conducted.
Expanding Healthcare Ecosystem
The acquisition aligns with Anthropic (搜索)'s growing ambitions in healthcare and scientific research. In early 2024, Anthropic introduced Claude (搜索) for Healthcare, aimed at supporting workflows across research, clinical trials, and regulatory operations. The company has been integrating Claude with a range of scientific platforms to extend its utility across the drug development lifecycle.
These integrations include partnerships with Medidata for clinical trial data, ClinicalTrials.gov for trial registry and planning, ToolUniverse for scientific tools, Open Targets for drug target identification, ChEMBL for bioactive compound data, and Owkin for AI pathology analysis, among others.
The company has also announced collaborations with major pharmaceutical and research companies such as Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, Genmab, AbbVie (搜索), the Allen Institute, and HHMI. Earlier this year, the company added features that enable healthcare professionals and insurers to use its AI systems in accordance with medical data regulations.
Anthropic (搜索)'s earlier acquisitions have focused on developer tools and AI infrastructure, but the Coefficient Bio (搜索) deal marks a clear step toward embedding AI deeper into scientific discovery and pharmaceutical innovation.
