CEO JeenJoo Kang announced the closure in a LinkedIn post on Monday, stating, "I am saddened to share that we decided to wind down Appia Bio (搜索). Without further funding available to test in patients, heartbreakingly, we had reached the end of our road."
Company Background and Technology Platform
Founded in 2020, Appia emerged from stealth mode in May 2021 with $52 million in Series A funding. The company was established by a team of industry veterans, including alumni from Kite Pharma (搜索), with Nobel laureate David Baltimore serving as chairman of the board alongside academic experts in genetics and chemical engineering.
The biotech's core technology centered on a drug development engine that generates CAR-engineered natural killer T cells (搜索). The company joins a growing list of biotech casualties this year, including several notable closures just in recent months.
Abata Therapeutics (搜索), which had been developing regulatory T cell therapies (搜索) for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases (搜索), decided to close operations in August due to "the current fundraising environment," according to a spokesperson from Third Rock Ventures (搜索). The company had launched in 2021 with Third Rock's support.
NextRNA Therapeutics (搜索) also announced its shutdown earlier in August, with CEO Dominique Verhelle revealing the decision to cease operations. Additional companies that have exited the market include Oncternal Therapeutics in July, National Resilience in June, and Vor Bio in May.
iTeos Therapeutics announced in May that it would cease operations and sell off its remaining assets and intellectual properties following a strategic review. The closure came after iTeos lost its partnership with GSK, which walked away from a 2021 collaboration focused on an anti-TIGIT therapy (搜索) for cancer (搜索).
