A session on "Applied Pharmacognosy: Personalizing Cannabis Dosing" will bring together two leading cannabis researchers to discuss cannabis dosing schedules and the science behind properly and accurately dosing cannabis. The event, sponsored by Drexel's Medical Cannabis Research Center (搜索), is scheduled for 4:00 PM–5:00 PM.
The featured speakers are Dr. Riley Kirk and Dr. Miyabe Shields, both co-founders of the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (搜索) (NAP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing rigorous research on natural products, exploring plant-based synergies, and bringing lived experience into the scientific process.
Speaker Expertise
Dr. Riley Kirk is a PhD-trained natural product chemist, educator, and author specializing in cannabis chemistry and pharmacology. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island and leads real-world cannabis research at NAP. Dr. Kirk is the author of Reefer Wellness, host of the Bioactive Podcast, and serves as a Lecturer for Vermont State University, where she teaches "Cannabis as Medicine – Introduction to the Chemistry and Pharmacology of Cannabis."
Dr. Miyabe Shields, PhD, is a cannabis research scientist and pharmaceutical scientist with more than 16 years of experience studying the structural biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system (搜索) and the medicinal value of cannabinoids. Their work sits at the intersection of natural products, cannabinoid science, pharmacognosy, and lived experience, informed by academic, industrial, and personal experience with cannabis as medicine. Dr. Shields received their PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Northeastern University and, following their doctorate, co-founded a cannabis research startup focused on heat-transformed cannabinoids, novel extraction technologies, and the development of new approaches to understanding and working with complex cannabis chemistry.
Focus on Personalized Dosing
The session centers on the practical challenge of personalizing cannabis dosing. Both speakers co-founded the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (搜索) in 2023, reflecting a shared commitment to rigorous natural products research and to integrating lived experience into the scientific process. By combining pharmacognosy with real-world cannabis research, the discussion aims to advance approaches for accurately dosing cannabis as medicine.
