The Cambridge-based biopharmaceutical company is developing AT278 as what CEO Sarah Howell describes as a "new unique best-in-class ultra-concentrated (500 U/mL) and ultra-rapid-acting insulin for the treatment of diabetes (搜索)." The candidate is progressing through a 50:50 co-development partnership with Sequel Med Tech (搜索), established in September 2025 with both parties committing up to $1.3 million to support AT278's development in combination with Sequel's twiist automated insulin delivery system.
The Phase II trial will specifically target people with high daily insulin needs and builds on positive feedback from a successful Type C meeting with the US Food and Drug Administration, where Arecor received endorsement for its innovative clinical study design.
"The combination of AT278 with a device such as Sequel's twiist AID system addresses key unmet needs for people living with diabetes (搜索) and is a compelling proposition for this growing market," Howell stated.
Oral Peptide Platform Development
Beyond diabetes (搜索) treatment, Arecor is developing a platform for oral delivery of complex peptides, beginning with an improved formulation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1 (搜索)) based on semaglutide. The company is addressing a significant bioavailability challenge, noting that existing oral GLP-1 treatments such as Rybelsus achieve "less than 1% oral bioavailability."
Arecor filed a European patent application in the final quarter of 2025 for novel compositions intended to improve absorption and is conducting non-clinical pharmacokinetic studies throughout 2026. Howell emphasized that the oral peptide platform "has a low resource burden but a large commercial upside opportunity" and could be highly translatable across multiple peptide therapeutics.
Financial Position and Strategic Focus
The company reported unaudited revenues of £3.1 million for 2025, down from £5.1 million in the prior year, reflecting the strategic discontinuation of Tetris Pharma operations. However, revenue from continuing activities rose slightly to £1.7 million.
Cash and cash equivalents increased significantly to £6.1 million from £3.2 million, attributed to favorable performance at Tetris prior to closure and a non-dilutive royalty financing deal with Ligand Pharmaceuticals worth up to $11 million, of which $7 million was received immediately. This financial position extends Arecor's operational runway into the first half of 2027.
