Enhanced Antimicrobial Activity
The patented formulation demonstrates superior effectiveness against bacteria compared to Mānuka honey (搜索) alone. Early results show the enhanced formulation is effective against many highly drug-resistant bacterial species, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA (搜索)) and other pathogens that are major causes of serious hospital infections and deaths worldwide.
Dr Cox, senior lecturer in microbiology in Aston University School of Biosciences, emphasized the urgent need for new therapeutic options. "Antibiotic-resistant infections such as Mycobacterium abscessus (搜索) are incredibly difficult to treat, and new therapeutic options are urgently needed," he said. "Our work shows that Mānuka honey (搜索) has remarkable potential, both on its own, as novel formulations, and in combination with existing antibiotics to tackle AMR."
Addressing a Global Health Crisis
The development comes at a critical time when AMR poses an escalating threat to global health. The World Health Organization considers AMR one of the top 10 global public health challenges, with the potential to cause up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050. In the UK, the government classifies AMR as a "chronic risk," with 35,200 deaths every year attributed to antimicrobial resistance (搜索).
The burden of AMR disproportionately affects certain populations. In New Zealand, Māori and Pacific people are more likely to be hospitalized with infectious illnesses, placing them at greater risk from antibiotic-resistant infections.
