核心洞察
AstraZeneca Pharma India (搜索) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries have formed a brand partnership to distribute sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) for hyperkalaemia (搜索) treatment across India.
The companies will market the drug under different brand names, with AstraZeneca retaining intellectual property rights while Sun Pharma leverages its extensive distribution network.
Hyperkalaemia (搜索) affects up to 50% of chronic kidney disease (搜索) patients and 42% of heart failure (搜索) patients, with mortality rates of 22.2% reported in India.
AstraZeneca Pharma India (搜索) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries have announced a strategic brand partnership to expand access to sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC), a critical treatment for hyperkalaemia (搜索), across India. The collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing the substantial disease burden of this life-threatening condition in the country.
Partnership Structure and Market Strategy
Under the agreement, both companies will promote, market, and distribute SZC under different brand names throughout India. AstraZeneca will market the drug as Lokelma, while Sun Pharma will promote and distribute it as Gimliand (搜索). AstraZeneca will retain intellectual property rights to SZC and maintain the marketing authorization along with the import license for the molecule.
"At AstraZeneca, we aim to transform care with a focus on increasing early screening, diagnosis, and adoption of guideline-directed medical therapy to improve patient outcomes," said Praveen Rao Akkinepally, Country President & Managing Director of AstraZeneca Pharma India (搜索). "This partnership with Sun Pharma for SZC reaffirms AstraZeneca's purpose to deliver innovative, life-changing medicines to patients with Hyperkalaemia (搜索) across India, coupled with building robust pathways to reach patients in need."
Addressing Critical Medical Need
Hyperkalaemia (搜索) is a clinically significant condition characterized by elevated potassium levels in the blood. The condition disproportionately affects patients with chronic kidney disease (搜索) (CKD) and those with heart failure (搜索) (HF) receiving renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (搜索) (RAAS) inhibitor therapy, which can elevate serum potassium levels.
Prevalence estimates indicate that hyperkalaemia (搜索) occurs in up to 50% of patients with CKD and 42% of patients with chronic heart failure (搜索). In India, mortality associated with hyperkalaemia has been reported at 22.2%, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment options.
Treatment Challenges and Solutions
To manage or prevent recurrence of hyperkalaemia (搜索), RAAS inhibitor therapy is often reduced or discontinued, which may compromise cardiorenal outcomes and increase mortality risk. Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate offers a rapid, effective, and generally well-tolerated treatment option for managing hyperkalaemia, potentially allowing patients to continue their essential cardiac and renal therapies.
"We are delighted to join hands with AstraZeneca to address the growing challenge of Hyperkalaemia (搜索) in India," said Kirti Ganorkar, Managing Director of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. "The addition of SZC to our portfolio underscores our unwavering commitment to improving the care of patients with chronic kidney disease (搜索)."
Market Positioning and Distribution Advantage
Sun Pharma brings significant market reach to the partnership as India's largest pharmaceutical company, holding an 8.3% market share and ranking number one in prescriptions across 13 different doctor categories. With a 15,000-strong field force, the company leads in chronic therapies and maintains a strong presence in the acute segment.
The partnership builds upon AstraZeneca's ambition to advance science and transform care for life-threatening conditions like hyperkalaemia (搜索). This strategic collaboration promises enhanced availability of crucial treatment and aims to contribute to better patient outcomes nationwide by leveraging both companies' strengths in the Indian pharmaceutical market.
