AstraZeneca announced the launch of AstraZeneca Direct, a new online platform designed to provide eligible patients with direct access to prescribed medications at transparent cash prices with home delivery. The platform, launching October 1, 2025, represents the pharmaceutical giant's latest effort to improve medication accessibility and affordability for patients with chronic conditions.
Platform Launch Details
Starting October 1, 2025, eligible patients with prescriptions for AIRSUPRA (albuterol/budesonide) or FARXIGA (dapagliflozin) will be able to purchase these medicines directly through AstraZenecaDirect.com for cash prices up to 70% off list price. Additionally, patients will have access to FLUMIST (Influenza (搜索) Vaccine Live, Intranasal) for home delivery through the platform.
"We remain deeply committed to improving accessibility, affordability, and driving innovation in healthcare and we are excited to launch AstraZeneca Direct, which will give patients a transparent cash price with the convenience of home delivery," said Joris Silon, US Country President at AstraZeneca. "The program complements our existing patient support services and is an important step forward in offering patients the medication they need, when and how they need it."
Medication Pricing and Indications
AIRSUPRA, with a list price of $489.25 for one inhaler, is a first-in-class rescue treatment for asthma (搜索) indicated for adults 18 years of age and older to treat or prevent symptoms of asthma and help prevent sudden severe breathing problems. The medication combines albuterol and budesonide in a fixed-dose combination rescue inhaler.
FARXIGA carries a list price of $599.72 for a 30-day supply and is used to lower blood sugar in people 10 years of age and older with Type 2 diabetes (搜索). The medication also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure (搜索), cardiovascular death, and kidney damage progression.
FLUMIST is a nasal spray vaccine that helps protect against influenza (搜索) in people ages 2 through 49 years. The FDA recently approved FLUMIST for self- or caregiver-administration in September 2024, following research demonstrating that individuals over 18 years of age can safely and effectively self-administer the vaccine.
Industry Trend Toward Direct-to-Consumer Models
AstraZeneca's initiative follows a growing industry trend of pharmaceutical companies offering direct-to-patient platforms with cash payment options. Bristol Myers Squibb (搜索) recently announced that beginning January 2026, it will offer Sotyktu (deucravacitinib) at more than 80% off the current list price of $6,828 for a 30-day supply to eligible, cash-paying US patients.
The Bristol Myers Squibb (搜索)-Pfizer Alliance also launched a program this month offering Eliquis (apixaban) at more than 40% off its list price of $606 for a 30-day supply through the Eliquis 360 Support website. Other major pharmaceutical companies including Eli Lilly, Pfizer, and Novo Nordisk have similarly implemented direct-to-consumer discount programs.
Market Drivers and Strategic Implications
According to IQVIA analysts, several factors are driving this trend, including price negotiation pressures from the Inflation Reduction Act, executive orders on Most Favored Nation pricing, and broader healthcare pricing reform initiatives. These programs have gained popularity due to surging drug prices and increased patient interest in consumer-like healthcare experiences.
Direct-to-patient platforms provide pharmaceutical companies with pricing control and transparency while sidestepping pharmacy benefit manager rebates and offering patients improved access along with additional disease awareness services.
Program Scope and Availability
AstraZeneca Direct is designed to support people living with chronic conditions such as asthma (搜索), diabetes (搜索), heart failure (搜索), and chronic kidney disease (搜索), as well as those seeking flu protection. The platform serves as an extension of the company's existing US patient support offerings, which continue unchanged for eligible patients and help significant numbers access prescribed AstraZeneca medications at no or reduced cost.
For FLUMIST home delivery, pharmacy laws vary by state, and the service will initially be available in 34 states for the 2025-2026 flu season, with plans to expand to all 48 contiguous states in future seasons.
