The results give the British drugmaker confidence to launch an extensive Phase 3 program in the second half of this year, as it seeks to carve out a position in the rapidly expanding obesity (搜索) therapeutics market.
Sharon Barr, AstraZeneca's executive vice president of biopharmaceuticals research and development, told reporters that the study results showed a competitive profile for elecoglipron (搜索) and potential for the medicine to become a blockbuster asset. The company views the drug as the backbone of potential future combination therapies, she added.
Phase 2 VISTA Trial Results
In the VISTA trial, which enrolled people with obesity (搜索) or who are overweight with at least one additional condition, elecoglipron (搜索) produced 11.8% weight loss after 36 weeks of treatment at the highest dose. When analyzed across all patients regardless of discontinuations, the weight loss figure was 11.2%, according to data presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans and published simultaneously in The Lancet.
A second Phase 2 trial demonstrated that elecoglipron (搜索) helped patients reduce their blood sugar levels, supporting the drug's potential utility in type 2 diabetes (搜索).
Safety and Tolerability
The safety profile of elecoglipron (搜索) was consistent with that of other medicines in the GLP-1 (搜索) class, AstraZeneca reported. Some patients experienced adverse events, primarily nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, but these rarely led to trial discontinuation.
Competitive Landscape and Phase 3 Plans
With Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk firmly established as leaders in the obesity (搜索) drug market, AstraZeneca is among several pharmaceutical companies—including Roche, Pfizer, Amgen, and Boehringer Ingelheim—racing to introduce a new generation of products into this fast-growing therapeutic area.
AstraZeneca's planned Phase 3 program will evaluate elecoglipron (搜索) as a treatment for people with obesity (搜索) or those who are overweight, with or without type 2 diabetes (搜索). The studies will assess the drug both as monotherapy and in combination with the company's diabetes drug Farxiga. Additionally, the drug's potential benefits in heart failure and chronic kidney disease will be investigated.
